Has anyone else noticed that the History Channel, at least in the U.S. seems to have an inordinately large number of documentaries about Nazi's? It seems like there is so much more to history that they are skipping.
Do you think there are any ulterior motive or strictly ratings?

On the UKTV History channel all they have is Nazis and this program called Gladiators of World War 2.
It's fucking shit.

I doubt it, probably because of ratings and availability of such documentarys and seeing as most of the Nature documentarys are all about sharks, unless theyre trying to indoctrinate us with some sort of Nazi-Shark ideology

They don't do the Nature thing, but there are many documentaries about the civil rights movement, Civil War, union movements, and kind of entertainment (music, dance, etc). National Geographic has documentaries about past civilizations, the dark ages, tribal people, etc.
I am beginning to think that somebody at the History Channel has a hard-on for Hitler.

American have a fascination with all things world war II. And the latent racist among the population may sympathize with the Nazis and the nationalist ideals they perpetuate.

I am beginning to think that somebody at the History Channel has a hard-on for Hitler. I thought the same thing for ages now. Its actually rather unnerving after a while. There is more documentories about hitler than there is about any of the allies. Strange..

Fuck I hate all the closet racists who try to be "objective" about nazi germany. They give excuses like: "Their uniforms look good", "their army was the best", or "Everything was not right but it was OK". What they really want to say is: "BEHEAD THE DIRTY JEWISH SCUM!!!! Yeah! I am so manly that I hate gypsys and muslims, that surely means I have a big dick!"

Do you want to start an e-mail campaign against Nazi documentaries and kind of post it and e-mail it out?
This evening, I will write a letter/e-mail to the History Channel and post it here.

Mean't to say that i was talking about Ireland/UK.
I think it's due to the fact that many people do find the Nazi's rise to power quite interesting, it doesn't necessarily mean they sympathise with them, although i agree that a sizable amount may do.

Anyone else noticed that all books about 'modern history' have Hitler on the cover?

I honestly don't understand why is everything about hitler. It's not as if the current world would have a shortage of right-wing mass murderers.

the nazis are unambiguously evil, so people find them fascinating, like serial killers, this make programs about them popular.

Yeah really. Whilst some of the reasoning on this thread has been amazing ("hard on for hitler" and "latent racism" being my two favourite reasons.). People like, for a vast number of reasons to hear about fucked up evil people. It's possible that it's also a calculated distraction: when you can hold up hitler to the public and say "at least we're not that guy" you can get away with more - however even this feels like hanging an unecessary conspiracy on it all.

I can actually watch the Nazi docs. What I can't watch is the monsterquest bs, where they try to find werewolves and shit.

I just think of it as the WW2 channel. I havn't seen anything else about history on there, it is like it was the only thing that even happend, I can't believe they are still making stuff about it, you would think we know everything, but we might not know it from each person alive in that era's perspective.

Wouldn't getting rid of information on Hitler and the Nazis make it more appealing? I think it's important that we learn from all aspects of history, even the worst bits. It's important to show horrible things like the rise of fascism and the Holocaust so it doesn't happen again.

Some people have proposed that The History Channel should change name into "The Hitler Channel".
It is mostly about ratings. Hitler is the closest equivalent our society has to the medieval Satan. He is a part of the modern mythology. That his defeat gave the USA a legitime right to be the "leader of the free world". I think it is unhealthy that western society today seems to be so fascinated with a mentally unstable man who died 64 years ago.
Moreover, History Channel is crap. They even have Nostradamus documentaries, and support all kinds of superstition. The documentary channels I prefer the most are "The Animal Planet" and "Kunskapskanalen" on Swedish Television.

I am going to send this letter to the History Channel as an e-mail. But, its useless, I just found out this shit is owned by Disney, its a done deal, but I will send message anyway.
I will send to these e-mail addresses ( I added Fox News, because they are just stupid enough to cover this because of rivalry with ABC), I will give it a shot:

Dear History Channel Programmer:
I and many others have noticed that many of your documentaries are focused on Nazism or Adolph Hitler. The Third Reich said that they would rule the world for 1000 years, but they were demolished after only about 20 years. If the History Channel doesn't want to fall, then the Nazi shows cannot rule programming on the History Channel. I'm using a little hyperbole, but it does get tiresome to look forward to learning something new about history, turn on the History Channel, and here we go again... more sieg hiels and blitzkrieg.
I think that war history is probably successful as far as generating an audience for you. However, I think you can air some shows about the Korean War, the War of 1812 (Russian or American), Grenada, the Dirty War, etc. There are many conflicts that people may want to see a documentary on.
Also, there is so much to history that is not related to wars. I think that the History Channel's current trajectory is downward fast. See, the Hitler/Nazi stuff can get people interested in history, but it can't sustain peoples' interest, its too limited.
I have not seen an explanation as to why so much of your programming is about Nazis, maybe the History Channel programmers have bad intentions i.e. "if you keep repeating a lie, people think it is true". The History Channel seems to be promoting Hitler and Nazism, maybe, I don't know. That's the only reason I can think of that explains all of the shows about Nazis, if there is a better explanation, I'd like to hear it.
Hopefully you can adjust your programming so that I can continue to watch.
Signed,
Waning Viewer

Such a straightforward accusation of nazism might make them question your bias. Otherwise a sound and reasonable feedback.
Oh, did I mention how TV is bourgeois decadence? No? Well it is. When one aquires one's documentaries and series through alternative sources, you can choose what you watch. Awesome!

Yeah, I want them to question the programming. They only respond to PR and viewership problems. So I tried my best to sort of combine them into one at the expense of appearing biased. Can you send that message too? Of course adjust it so that it reflects what you think?

I dunno if they take me seriouly considering that I have an e-mail address that ends: .fi That, and the fact that the history channel does not air here.
BUT, I will try. Lets see if quantity defeats quality. :)

I hate to watch animal television, its the most boring and most sleepy programs with annoying voices and music and animals ARGH.
but Kunstsskapkanalen i watch, i can take i here from copenhage, also the french/german channel "Arte" is rather nice, it once had a documentary about Hanns Eisler witch i loved.
here in denmark we have the DR2, they send mixed stuff.
but to be honest i have no problem with WW2 stories, usually because they don't send so much about it, but what i dont like is that some of the programs are rather "positive" to nazism, and like saying its acceptable to be nazi almost...
we should still remind the horrors of ww2. but those programs are better then bad crimis with fucking melancolic elder english-men solving murderes... and i tell you, those crimis are all the fucking time on TV and im fuckin tired. thank you
