A few days ago President Voronin resigned as the Commies lost power. Following this there was a deadlock as no one had the majority required to elect a new president. But the Communist Party has today announced that they may support a liberal president under certain conditions.

:( The end of the only communist government in Europe

Who cares? It was a capitalist government full of Soviet-nostalgists. Was the economy nationalized under workers control? Were the workers not exploited? Besides, a communist goverment is a contradiction in itself.

The outcome of this may likely lead to shit...at least I do agree on that being a possibility as I sure hope most of the people on this board do.
But having that "communist" party in power (which was the status quo) didn't really move that country closer to socialism and/or communism. They are not exactly deserving of our support. If they stayed in power things would have probably stayed the same (not that this is specifically a bad thing considering the possibility that the liberals may be worse...)

Yeah, while the Communists are far from revolutionary and only really maintained the status quo, it is much better than what the liberals will do (integrating Moldova into EU to maximise capitalist and NATO control).
Besides, a communist goverment is a contradiction in itself.http://www.revleft.com/vb/../revleft/smilies/001_rolleyes.gif
No it's not. That's a stupid and incorrect statement. A government can be communist in that it is actively working to create communism and adheres to communist theory. Communism refers to the political orientation as well as the communist stage of society. A government can be communist, just as a person can be communist. For example, I am communist, but I am not a classless stateless society. :p

You forgot Cyprus. Which has a party considered communist in power and is part of the European Union. AKEL is part of the European United Left- Nordic Green Left. Other members of that include Die Linke in Germany, Sinn Fein in Northern Ireland, and the French Communist Party. So yeah, you get the picture. AKEL isn't revolutionary either.

What was communist about it?

Moldova is a liberal capitalist democracy, and, as such, you can't expect a party to stay in power forever. The CP had to be voted out sooner or later.
And this is not a bad time to be out of power. Moldova's economy is likely to go to shit no matter who is in charge, due to the global recession. It may be a smart move to let the liberals govern and take the blame. On the other hand, if the CP takes a more hardline stance and forces another round of elections by vetoing any liberal president, they might share the blame for the inevitable moment when the shit really hits the fan.
In other words, it looks like the CP is ready to gamble that the liberal coalition will be incompetent and unpopular. Is this a good bet? I don't know. I hope it is.

As for "the last communist government in Europe", Belarus is much more "communist" (in the sense of being closer to the old Soviet system) than Moldova ever was.
