In July of 2009, four university students began working at a Coca-Cola bottling plant in Hangzhou. On August 11th, one of the students was bitten by a dog while trying to get his wages. Then, on August 12th, two of the students (Xiao Liang and Xiao Xu) went to continue to try to get their owed wages from the Zhiqiang Company (Zhiqiang is a labor dispatch company which provides workers to the Hangzhou BC Foods Company Coca-Cola bottling plant). On that day, Xiao Liang was beaten in the office of Zhiqiang’s vice-general manager to the point that he was severely injured – his left eye became bloody, left hand was scraped, right ear drum punctured, and he had bruises all over his body.
At that time [before the violent incident], the students and the vice-general manager talked for quite a long time, but no resolution about [their wages] was reached. On the 8th of that month, the vice-general manager had promised them that they could be paid on the 14th. When the students said, “will we really be able to get our wages on Friday (the 14th)?” a Zhiqiang employee standing nearby rushed over, punched Xiao Liang in the face, and said, “you boys came to make trouble!” Xiao Liang defended himself, and the vice-general manager just symbolically motioned to pull them apart. After they stopped, Xiao Liang called the police. At this point, the thug who had just been fighting called another colleague, and the two of them continued to beat Xiao Liang. After that the general manager arrived he was itching to have a go at Liang, saying things like “I’ve been hanging around Xiasha for a long time and have excellent connections,” to threaten him.
While Xiao Liang and the other students were at the hospital and giving their deposition at the police station, the Zhiqiang company continuously threatened them. Employees from the company claimed they had connections with organized crime, saying, “we’ve been to the police station a few times before, and we don’t mind going again.” Later, Zhiqiang also threatened to file a lawsuit against the students for disrupting production. However, they alternately asked the students if they wanted to settle the matter in private, all without the least bit of sincerity.
The attitude of Coca-Cola is even more disappointing. After Xiao Liang was beaten, we tried to contact Coca-Cola (China) in the hope that they would help to resolve this matter. However, Coca-Cola said that Hangzhou BC Foods Company must resolve the matter, and that the resolution of the matter was not up to them. But Hangzhou BC Foods Company (a bottling plant for Coca-Cola) continually evaded responsibility, and put all of the responsibility on the labor dispatch company. What’s more, they made the threat that if Zhiqiang was unable to resolve the problem, it would affect Coca-Cola’s brand image, and they would cease to work together. This is how they shirked their responsibility. During this entire process, Hangzhou BC Foods did not make any appearance. Although they said to the media that they would visit the injured student, there has not been a trace of them up until now, and we have been unable to get contact information for the responsible person from the company.
After the students who worked in the factory were trying to get the wages to which they were entitled, they were beaten twice without reason, and received various kinds of threats. This has given the students quite a heavy emotional burden. These students are afraid of retaliation, and aside from going to the police station, they just wait around near their school. Now two of the students have given up their wages and returned home.
The Coke Concerned Student Group can only post things on-line, send emails, and contact the media in the hopes that we can receive public support to give them pressure.
In order to achieve this, we would like everyone to use their own individual power and sign our petition in order to give Coca-Cola and their labor dispatch company more pressure so that they will take responsibility, appropriately resolve this matter, and improve their employment situation.
