wow, it's patriotism, imperialism and religious stupidity all in one image. I'm sure many of you have read a version of this story already, though.

The intertwining of religion and militarism is obvious but also note the anti-intellectual flavour to this conservative 'parable'

The marine just proved that his god is far from allmighty, and therefore not worthy of my worship.

Hey some of us live over here!:glare:
Who's worse, god or american marines?
Well God has plagues, mass death and the destruction of the world under his belt. Marines are far worse.

No, I haven't.
Is this based on something that actually happened.

I really doubt it. Although I don't suppose that even if it was they would print the part where Pvt. Meathead gets done for assault and battery, is stripped of his military pension and spends the rest of his life in and out of correctional facilities partially because he's an unbelievablely violent prick and partially because the current attempts to rehabilitate criminals are beyond a joke. I don't think that would send the right message.

I very much doubt it.
Also, what with 3000+ dead US soldiers being dead I can't say God is doing a very good job of protecting them.
EDIT: Pipped to the post by the rat!

Well Allah is doing worse. But I think the reason that both sides are dying is because they run into machine gun fire under the idea that a nonexistent deity will protect them.

I'm pretty sure Muslims more often get hit by machine gun fire because there's an invading army in their country.

That's why I said allah is doing worse at protecting his peeps. And I'm counting all automatic weapons as machine guns.

I don't think it has actually happened...
In fact, I've seen different variations of the story this one is perhaps the lamest.
If anything, it just shows people who believe in god to be a bunch of violent nutters who beat you up if you say anything bad about their imaginary friends.
In fact, whatever discussion/debate that could emerged from this incident would only make religion look bad since it only re-enforces the idea that religion is a cause (or ideological/"superstructure" support; since reasons and causes come mostly from material conditions) for violence.
It's actually anti-intellectual, pro-religion, patriotic, and even anti-communist in a sense (i.e. right-wingers in the U.S. think of the ACLU as a communist group )
