View Full Version : reading list

I was just thinking that it might be a good idea to compile a reading list for leftist literature.
Especially when reading marxist literature you often have the problem that it contains many references to other more or less important works. Some of these references are almost completely irrelevant ( many of the 18th century historians, whose books aren't even available anymore ), others can turn out to be quite important.
A few days ago I had a debate with my history teacher, and he said that Marx's Dialectical Materialism was a perversion of Hegels dialectic. I didn't get him, to be honest. In fact, Marx REJECTS Hegels idea of dialectic.
However, I had to admit that I haven't even read Hegel, all I know is the definition of Hegel's dialectic. Well, and that was the end of the debate :(
Therefore I thought it might be a good idea to compile a reading list for leftist literature. I do NOT think that _reading_ is what makes e.g. a marxist a marxist, however I do think that we need to be prepared for debate. Even if you're not into debate, and like to just "philosophize" all on your own, it might still be inspiring to read once in a while.
In order to not make it too dull, feel free to add anything which qualifies as "left" literature, even fiction or poetry. Just do some brainstorming we will sort it later. Any true leftwing ideologie qualifies. Note: if you list a compilation of works, please also give a list of the works in the compilation. Language doesn't matter, as long as it's available in more than one language.
I don't mean this list to be just a list with "must-read books" but more of a general overview, or map of leftist literature. If you've read a book that you consider worth reading, add it here and maybe write a short comment.
Before we start, let me know what you think. Maybe such a thread already exists, there is no need to reinvent the wheel :)

J. Stalin - Leninism
( I'm not a big Stalinist, but it's interesting to read if you want to learn something about his interpretation of Leninism )
V.I. Lenin - what to do
( (1902-1903), contains an interesting article from the Iskra. More of historical interest. Rare.)
And of course: Karl Marx - Das Kapital. Haven't read all three books yet, since Capital is really really dull. Some chapters are very interesting though ( available as seperate books ), for example "the previous accumulation", where Marx tears apart the legend of the hard-working upper class.
Fiction:
Bertold Brecht - Flüchtlingsgespräche
( This is the only one that came to my mind, but there are many more great books by Brecht that deal with socialism. Haven't been able to find out the english title :( )

Thanks for posting everyone, and thanks MJM for maintaining the list :)
Another good book just came to my mind:
The Anarchists by James Joll
If you think anarchism is about drinking beer, filling the empty bottles with gasoline and throwing them at riot cops ( which can be fun though ), read this book!
It gives you a broad overview of the history of anarchism, and introduces some of the most important anarchists ( Babeuf, Bakunin, Durruti, Godwin, Kropotkin, Proudhon etc. ). Of course, a little bit biased ( e.g. Durruti is portrayed as a ruthless slayer ) , but which book isn't. I'm not an anarchist myself by the way ;)
I hope some more people will post to this thread.

AbstractMentality, Althusser is a nut!!!
i had a feeling someboy would say that. now, he may have strangled his wife (i think, but not sure), but that doesnt mean that he couldnt write some very important essays. however, the one i listed above is the only thing of his that i have read (i had to turn the book back to the library). He may be considered a little "old school" now (even though it was written in the 70's, i think) but i still see the above essay to be an important read for anyone that wants to learn some Althusserian terms for they way we learn within a structure of capitalism. if you havent read the essay, check it out. i used it to help the defining of Pauls learning process in the story linked in my sig for my college english class, and got an A- on the paper (although the instructor is a leftists and suggested the essay to help me out).

Break through rapid reading
Really now, dun waste your time. I do a book a day when I'm lazy. Lazy meaning I refuse to get out of bed all day, even to eat. On a productive day I can knock out 5-6 books.
Profit over People by Noam Chomsky
Thee definition of the world economy, in a nutshell. Includes important information on resistance, such as the EZLN and the CNT-FAI. I personally found No Logo a waste of time when put next to this.
Urban Injustice by hilfiker
I can't say I found anything new, but this is the concise version of what I know from reading several different books on poverty.
Reading capital politically by harry cleaver
An autonomist communist reply to the idea of vanguardism.
Eric Hobsbawm's "Age of...." set
4 books in all. If you read Howard Zinn's a people's history, Hobsbawm is the world history counterpart.
Conquest for bread by kropotkin
They say Trotsky predicted the fall of the soviet union. Kropotkin did too. Key difference: kropotkin predicted it before the revolution.
society of the spectacle by guy debord
Possibly the best contemporary interpretation of marxist theory. Also talks about globalization in extents that superceed lenin's theory of imperialism. For more of the like, check anything done by the situationist international.
killing hope by william blum
I can't say I liked this. For me it was nothing new. I read books on each incident, so this was pointless to me. But rather than wasting your time on a mountain of boring books, hit the necessary first and expand on that.
