Anyone heard about this?

Good article, certainly worth a read, can be found here:

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/europe/article6829678.ece

The crux of it is that under new laws in Italy, neo fascist vigilante groups have essentially been legalised. This is in heavy connections with the fears of a crime wave due to mass immigration and right wing propaganda about rapists in the Roma community.

Some laws have also been brought which were recently compared to the infamous race laws brought in by Benito Mussolini.

Thoughts?

leftists should organize parallel groups for patrolling, which will follow and control fascist groups.
there was already conflict among leftist and fascist group at the point of control of the city by fascist group.

in any case, that's so when capital (berluskoni) succeed in politics. he included party of granddaughter of mussolini in his party also. if people watch it passive, the same as jewish did it before 50 years, fascism will be stronger and stronger and result will be bigger and bigger repression and more and more foreigners will be dead.

Oh shit. I remember the shitstorm that occurred when Haider was invited in a coalition government. It seems like that if a raving fascist was elected in a European country tomorrow, the other EU countries would just legitimise that government.

Italy's really scary for stuff like this. The police force is also meant to be quite heavily infiltrated by fash, from what I've heard.

I actually just finished reading that article in the paper. The similarities with the historical rise of fascism is disturbing to say the least. You have the complicity of the bourgeoisie, the weakness of parliamentary politics, the bias of local officials, a 'legitimate' campaign of violence (this time directed against immigrants rather than strikers), and the transformation of 'vigilantes' into political militias

Nonetheless, that's where it should stop. In the absence of an active and powerful left, or even the illusion of one, there's no reason for the liberal establishment (which you'd have to assume is stronger than it was in 1920) to throw in their lot with the fascists. Immigration just isn't important enough a reason to cause this, at least not on its own. And without bourgeois support fascism is merely a very nasty form of thuggery

Still, not a good development and one that's definitely worth keeping an eye on

It already seems to late for italy, the left doesn't seem to be doing ANYTHING and the fash are openly walking in the streets in uniforms, AND BEING SUPPORTED by the people and the government!

This is probably not even about immigration, but just a pretext for Berlusconi's media empire to strengthen its position in its litiguous vendetta with the Italian judiciary. Berlusconi main hate object is neither socialists or the immigrants, but the Italian judges.

hmmm...

Not good news.

Is this mainly for the Lega Nord type neighbourhood patrols? I have heard they simply go around hassling immigrants and calling them all drug dealers.
