It is there to put pressure against Cuban Revolution and try to lower the standard of living Cuban workers and peasants enjoy thanks to the planned economy. The Cuban Revolution is a point of reference among the advanced workers and peasants of Latin America, who see it as a paradigm they should follow. The US imperialists understand the international significance of the Cuban Revolution and will try by all means to undermine it spreading in the rest of Latin America. For the US ruling class (as a matter of fact for the ruling classes of the whole world) a socialist federation of Latin America and subsequently a Socialist Federation of all the Americas is their mortal fear.
It's indicative that Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, both suggested they may lift the trade embargo on condition that Cuba pursues "democratic reform". The main European powers also added their advice, saying that Castro's retirement could open the road to "democratic change". This "democratic change" is none other than the triumph of the forces of reaction.
This "democratic change" in Cuba, has nothing to do with the democratic change Marxists support. We support the workers getting the democratic control of the means of production and the state from the hands of the bureaucracy. The imperialists want the bourgeoisie to bring a "democratic change" by creating a dictatorship of capital and a return to exploitation, misery and pauverty.

The american bourgeoisie is terrified of the Cuban revolution and its many achievements and will stop at nothing to detroy the revolution short of an out and out invasion. Their bourgeois cousins around the world also hate and fear the revoltuion but have different strategies to undermine it. Neither will succeed!! Viva Cuba, Viva socialismo

Oh, no, they would completely willingly invade such a country. But they need a good enough reason to keep the rest of the world of their backs. All the capitalist countries are not such good budbuds, they will leap at each others throats whenever they get the chance.

if the US did take away the embargo wouldnt that allow private companies to move in and slowly erode the current system down? its has already happened in certain areas of Cuba where there are private hotels for holiday makers

I always wondered, that if the US found an excuse to invade Yugoslavia,Afghanistan, Iraq ( x 2) and so many other countries, they could very well find one to invade Cuba.
The brainwashing of US citizens has been going on for decades, no problem there.
Why do they choose the option to choke the country economically, rather than bomb the place to bits?

It's not just a question of the US citizens, but of the opinion of the whole world. An invasion of Cuba would be *really* bad for what goodwill the US still has left around the world.

Cuba is so close to American people that an attack on Cuba might cause actual rioting on American streets. Sad but true that the American population has an infinite capacity to turn a blind eye on American wars and monstrosity, as long as it happens on the other side of the world, to people who have a different evil religion. Arabs portrayed as radical Muslims are an evil mystery to Americans, but Catholic Cubans have a peaceful and positive image.
