this series of books, The Hitchicker's Trilogy(inappropriatly named as there are five books), are the funniest books I have ever read. Completly random at points and very witty at others, Extremly well written and it gives the answer to the question of life the universe and everything. If only we knew the question...
Here is an excerpt from my favorite part...

In the book our heros are fired on by a deserted planet that launches two nuclear missles. Their ship has a little ditty called the improbability drive that can create the most improbable evnt at that time. The Ship turns one of the missles into a sperm whale and the other into a bowl of Petunias. The next page or two explains what the whale was thinking from the moment of its creation to its demise. (i.e. "What is this thing coming towards me? I will call it ... oun.. round... ground. Ah Ha! Ground! I wonder if it will be friends with me... SPLAT") Soon after the writer, Douglas Adams, explains what the bowl of Petunias thought... i.e. "Curiously though all the bowl of Petunias thought was 'Oh no, not again' many have debated that if we knew why it had thought this, the universe would make a hell of a lot more sense..." I have to say that I laughed for almost an hour after reading this and I rcomend this series to anyone.

I absolutely adore Hitchhiker, you read the salmon of doubt? It's pretty damn good, I'll tell you.

Anyway I have to say my fave bit is about the rain god having all those different types of rain and the eskimos having all those different words for snow, especially the "yellow snow that the huskies have been at" or something!!!!

I also suggest you try and get a hold of the audio version that was done by bbc. It's so damn good. They have the perfect voices for each of the characters :)

"Hey, you sass that hoopy Ford Prefect? There's a frood who really know where his towel is." (Sass: know, be aware of, meet, have sex with; hoopy: really together guy; frood: really amazingly together guy.)

I love those books, Douglas Adams was a genius! I think Marvin would have to be my favourite character - so apathetic... 'Why stop now, just when I was hating it?'
