Hi all!
I'm Gwy, a leftist youth from the Netherlands.
I'm a student, and generally regarded as 'lazy, longhaired, leftist hippy scum', but I consider myself 'lazy, longhaired, leftist, hippy intellectual scum'.
I recently did a researchpaper for my history-study about the Barcelona may-days, so my vocabulair regarding certain denominations might not be completely neutral right now, even though I consider myself a ecclectic and am of opinion that sectarism is the downfall for radical left.
Anyway, I didn't pass my examns at university, so I switched to political science instead, about a week ago^^

It's not nearly as red as it used to be, to be honest.

Hi all!
I'm Gwy, a leftist youth from the Netherlands.
I'm a student, and generally regarded as 'lazy, longhaired, leftist hippy scum', but I consider myself 'lazy, longhaired, leftist, hippy intellectual scum'.
What's with the Orwell reference? Don't you know he hated 'filthy, unmanly hippie scum?'
"One sometimes gets the impression that the mere words 'Socialism' and 'Communism' draw towards them with magnetic force every fruit-juice drinker, nudist, sandal-wearer, sex-maniac, Quaker, ‘Nature Cure’ quack, pacifist, and feminist in England."
"We have reached a stage when the very word ‘Socialism’ calls up, on the one hand, a picture of aeroplanes, tractors, and huge glittering factories of glass and concrete; on the other, a picture of vegetarians with wilting beards, of Bolshevik commissars (half gangster, half gramophone), of earnest ladies in sandals, shock-headed Marxists chewing polysyllables, escaped Quakers, birth-control fanatics, and Labour Party backstairs-crawlers."
"If only the sandals and the pistachio-coloured shirts could be put in a pile and burnt, and every vegetarian, teetotaler, and creeping Jesus sent home to Welwyn Garden City to do his yoga exercises quietly!"

I think the reference was meant to be ironic.

Hahaha!
I was not aware of Orwell's view on hippies. I found that I very much liked the book Homage to Catalonia, and also 1984 and I think I once read an essay of Orwell's about Socialists and Christmas.
Can you send me a link to the original texts? I think I'll laugh my ass of reading them!
