what did he do to earn him the revile of so many leftists and anti-imperialists? I understand he greatly expanded the british empire into southern africa but he is hardly the only rabid imperialist of his day. there muist have been something unique about his crimes. i have thus far failed to find any significant information as to what.

He was a particularly aggressive imperialist, with very clear racist ideas, and despite that fact he is still put forward as a hero by the British bourgeoisie. He also helped Britain take over the territories which were later named Rhodesia after him (Zimbabwe today).

I think the most reprehensible of the 19th-century colonialists was Henry Morton Stanley, and he is still hero-worshipped over the entire western world.

Cecil Rhodes was perhaps no more evil than any other British imperialist or wealthy capitalist of his day, but he certainly is one of the most high profile ones.
The legacy of inequality in land distribution in Zimbabwe and Zambia today are directly the result of his actions, at one time the entire colony was literally the possession of his private corporation. He contributed immensely to the actions of British imperialism in Africa and inflicted incredible suffering on the indigenous tribes of the region.
He also created the De Beers mining corporation, so all of the exploitation and abuses they engage in as part of the diamond industry is partly his crime as well.
The final injustice of his life is that he died in bed when he should've been eaten by hyenas on the Serengeti.
