Protesters torched cars in the slum area of Heliopolis and TV footage showed the Portuguese word for justice scrawled on a road.

Dozens of people remained on the streets well into the night and police had to use rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse them.

There was no word on injuries or arrests amid the clashes.

It is the third time this year serious violence has broken out in Sao Paulo's largest slum.

The riot was reportedly triggered by the death of an unnamed teen, who was shot as police pursued alleged car thieves nearby.

Three officers involved in the incident were put on temporary leave, according to Sao Caetano's public safety director, Moacyr Rodrigues.

He confirmed their actions and that of the city's military police were now being investigated.

The police in Brazil appear to be out of control. Whether this was an accident or not, the Brazilian police operate like executioners and armed thugs. It is appalling that such large slums even exist in a country with so much potential and natural resources not to mention the high percentage of blacks who are unable to move up the social ladder.

I hope some of our Brazilian comrades are able to comment on this.

I´m not completely sure what happened in these streets. However, police brutality is an old one here.
