Blood Struggle

O intoxicating kiss of death-
Come and fill me with your mellow poison.
Lick the salt from off my wounds,
And close mine eyelids that I may rest.
These battle scars, now screaming with pain,
Will become a constant, dear reminder of my struggle.
Imprinted in my comrades’ minds,
Ingrained into my comrades’ souls.

Lush, green fields, soaked in red.
That hue with a rich, bitter history
Tells stories of the past-
Of how it flooded the streets of Las Angeles,
Of how it stained the peaceful grounds at Kent State,
And ran nobly from the bodies of heroes
In the Sierra Maestra, in Chiapas,
At the Loraine Motel in Memphis,
At the Czar’s palace in Russia,
At the Audoban Ballroom in New York-

And now.

O dear blood, made of freedom,
Let this sacrifice be etched in the conscience of history.
Carry my message to those that wish to share my suffering
In the fight for life.
And death, taking me in her arms,
Bears the flag of justice,
Proclaiming truth to anyone who will listen.
As my blood hardens the earth,
Never quite washed away by the rain.
