The film and the book are both superb.
Spike Lee is a genius.

This is an excellent book that I would recommend for anyone. Malcolm X-I must say-I look upon with admiration, respect as a father-hero. Listen to what he says, it brings great strength, wisdom, and courage.

Just remember, one of the reasons the book is so good is that Alex Haley, the author of Roots, was the author. It's an "as told to" book, and Haley was a fine writer who should not be overlooked when praising the book.

This book changed my life. Simple as that. I read it when I was like 14 and it was one of the most instrumental change agents in my outlook on life and the formation of my philosphies and ideas. In other words, everyone on the planet should read it.

What is the TV series of Roots like? I presume it is the same thing(?). I've got that at home and I'm gonna watch it soon enough.

The first scene in the movie is brilliant: Denzel giving Malcolm X's speech about "charging the white man with murder". The image goes from an American flag to the rodney king footage, and as it alternates the american flag begins to burn, creating an X. Ahhh, it was soooo amazing.

Thats my book I love roots

it's so much better than the series

but the series was incredible so that tells you something about the book

the book gives more on Kunta's life before slavery

I`ve read it couple years ago, and I really loved it. The way Malcolm has changed from street delikvent to a educated and man dedicated to a goal, impressed me.

I loved the book to. I read it while in 8th grade and I suppose it made me put my head up. Malcolm X was one of the greatest influences in my life, and I still listen to his speeches which I burned onto CD.

I'd advise anyone interested in the street life part of it to read "Man Child in the Promised Land" by Claude Brown, it gives a much grittier perspective of the streets of Harlem, but even better it shows how a man got out of Harlem and made himself successful despite everything.

Quite a few of his speeches can be found on Kazaa. They are good to listen to, only one that he seems like a flaming racist is "White Liberal Jews" but that was earlier in his life, so it's forgivable.

I mean the "White Liberal Jews" speech scared me. This was when I used to listen to Farakhan, and Malcolm X scared me. Like he seemed really, really pissed in this speech. He took shots at whites and Jews.

I finished it a while ago, and I agree with the coolness. I don't feel overly changed by it, but I understand his positions more, and he has been added to my heroes list, right up there alongside Gandhi, Jesus and Che.

I'm just reading it and it's really good. I have seen a little bit of the movie and i'm gonna watch it when i'm read the book. Spike Lee is a good director and Denzel (Washington???) is also a good actor.
