For a bunch of lumpens the mafia could twist the arms of the power that be in a way that we workers could only envy. I mean by blackmailing Hoover of the FBI to lay off their backs. Amazing.

I wouldn't call the Mafia bosses "lumpens". Their influence in government and often legitimate business interests puts them at least on par with most normal capitalists.

They weren't workers. They didn't produce anything. What services did they offer?--- prostitution, gambling, narcotics, etc.

Gambling at least is an accepted and legal service in many places in the US. Besides which many of them had legitimate business interests that served to shield them from the most damaging federal inquiries. I'm not saying that automatically makes them capitalists, but it does put them pretty far outside the Marxist concept of lumpen-proletariat, i.e., the class/stratum that has no relationship to the means of production.
