The eager of the Germans to be superior in Europe was an initial case of the WW1 and the WW2 and they managed to perform their willing very quickly. After the beginning of the military operation in September 1939 they took control of the whole continental Europe except outlying districts - Yugoslavia and Greece, which were joined a little bit later, in the spring of 1941.
More over, when invading most of the countries they met low resistance. For example, the German’s invasion of Poland started in 1.09.1939 and in 17.09.39 the Polish Government left the country. And we can see even more surprising facts: in France the Germans troops occupied Paris after 40 (!) days of the beginning of their attack at the west front,- whereas they couldn’t, do it during the 4 years of the WW1.
The begging of the German’s conquering of continental Europe was called “Phoney War”. The real war began only in 22.06.1941. Short duration skirmishes of military forces of the European countries were more keeping decency but not a real war with an enemy.
There are a lot of books written about the following European resistance, which pretends to be a proof of the fact that continental Europe rejected the union under the German supremacy.
But the intensity of their resistance is being overrated (except the guerilla in Yugoslavia, Albania and Greece). Of course, the establishment of the German regime evoked some protests in Europe. But we should understand that there were people who rejected this regime even at the Germany itself, but it wasn’t the resistance of the whole nation and the whole country. The same thing is about France – here is the striking statistic- during the 5 years in French resistance died 20 thousands of French (with the population about 40 millions), and at the same time died 40-50 thousands2-2,5 times more! of French who fought for the Nazi.
It is said, that Poland is also among the countries with a mighty resistance. But it is wrong. For example, in Yugoslavian resistance died 300 thousands of people (with the population about 16 millions), in Albanian – 29 thousands ( with only one million of population). And in the Polish resistance – 33 thousands ( with 35 millions of population). So we can see, that the portion of population that have died during the real fight against German power in Poland 20 times lower than in Yugoslavia and 30 times lower than in Albania!
The real resistance took place only in Yugoslavia, Albania and Greece. Nearly the rest of the continental Europe joined the new empire without disobedience.
Nearly a half of 2 dozens of European countries(Spain, Denmark, Croatia, Italy, Norway, Hungary, Finland, Slovakia) took part in the war against the USSR.
The rest of the European countries didn’t fight against the USSR, but they worked for the new empire . English historian Alan Tailor says : “ German domination was setting by various means from annections and direct ruling to a forma equal paternity”… “Sweden and Switzerland because British didn’t bomb them were in fact able to be more useful to Germans than if they were occupied. Germany get from Switzerland iron ore, machinery. Without these things Germans wouldn’t be able to continue the war… “That’s how Europe became economically united.”
Not all people know the fact that D.Eisenhower , who joined the war with the head of British-American troops in Northern Africa in November, 1942, for a start had to fight with not with the Germans, but with 200000 French soldiers!. Although they capitulated soon because of evident superiority of Eisenhower's troops. However, during this military operation 584 American, 597 Britain soldiers were killed, as well as 1600 French fighting against them.
Of course, it was a little loss, but it shows us that the situation in Europe was more complicated than we used to think.
And now more sticking facts about the confrontation between continental Europe headed by Germany and the USSR: among the personnel captured by the soviet army personnel were 2,5 Germans and Austrian, about 800 thousands Italians, Romanians and Hungarians, and other nations, who had declared the war to the Soviet union, but also there were nearly half a million(!) of French, Belgian and other nations, who hadn’t declared the war. Of course, the majority of soldiers that invaded the UUSR in 1941 were Germans. But we need to remember, that the mobilization of nearly a quarter of all Germans was able only with the help of the continental Europe. In the UUSR were mobilized only 17% of population, because there was need in well qualified workers to work for war industry.
So, the military strength of the army, which invaded the USSR was ensured by millions of well-qualified workers all round Europe. For example, at Germany there were about 10 millions of foreign workers. Without that knowledge you can’t understand the strength of German attack and realize, what the essence of the war was.
In fact, the goal of the war was achieved not by 70 millions of Germans, but by the 300 millions of united Europeans-either united by force or their own wish. And the Europeans carried on supporting Germany al long as its army was successful.
