Not for the faint hearted. This is up there with Henrik Larsson's and Eduardo's leg breaks, but I'm told this was intentional as there was some bad blood between the two

Axel Witsel of Standard Liège practically destroying Marcin Wasilewski of Anderlecht's career

He needs surgery, double open legbreak and a shin break

Marcin Wasilewski, victim of multiple open fractures of the calf and tibia, underwent temporary surgery on Sunday night. "The medical team cleaned the open wound as well as possible", said Louis Kinnen, head of RSC Anderlecht’s medical staff. "That is, because of the nature of the injury, there is a high risk of infection. Therefore, Marcin will be given antibiotics during the next few days. The purpose of that treatment is to make sure that he can be treated (operated on) definitively in the course of this week."

Don't think demoral fixes shattered bones.

Urgh, I hate these things. I only saw a still of it, and I'm not inclined to have a good long look at the gif in the OP. Spine-chilling.

Witsel declared afterwards that he did not have a malicious intent, that it wasn't deliberate. Well, duh, of course nobody enters a challenge with the intent of turning the other guy's leg into a bloody pulp. But there are always footballers who are prepared to make challenges that can seriously hurt the opponent. And, given the rivalry between these sides, it's not like anyone was on the pitch planning to "take it easy"...

No, but it does wonders for the pain.

For some strange reason 'horrific' is the word always used for these tackles. And that one was just horrific. Let's just hope it isn't the end of your man's career

Well, duh, of course nobody enters a challenge with the intent of turning the other guy's leg into a bloody pulpI wish that were the case but there's always a few (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jzEGkmY-Vio&feature=related). That particular tackle effectively ended Håland's career yet Keane said afterwards, and I quote, "I'd waited long enough. I fucking hit him hard. The ball was there (I think). Take that you ****."

Well he's already 29 and did you see that leg? He won't be walking on that anytime soon, let alone kick a ball. His carreer is pretty much over.

My stepfather was a professional football player, and a tackle like this ended his career. He was 30 when it happened.
As I said, shit happen. You know of dangers when you choose to ba a professional athlete. And I doubt that this tackle was intentional.
However, if it was, he should be banned from professional football for life. The guy who injured my stepfather did not do it on purpose, so they had a drink when he got out of hospital.

Challenges like this may not be considered as simple "industrial accidents" for much longer. A player who had his career ruined by a tackle in 1987, has been compensated by the court after a 20-year legal battle.

1987, Danny Hoekman's promising career comes to a screeching halt.

This may set a precedent for the future. However, it will be extremely hard to put into practice. What if a tackle like this ends Cristiano Ronaldo's career, and he seeks damages for all the income that he will miss out on? No club will be able to afford that...

Also, a pretty disgusting tackle from Wesley Sneijder in the friendly against Japan just now (the second one):

oCB7kN-Yiqg

What the fuck is he thinking, doesn't he watch the news or something? Luckily, no further consequences in this case. Except for Sneijder himself, who got a taste of his own medicine (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Revenge) later in the match (from none other than Keisuke Honda...), and may be out for a few weeks. :D

Wow.. Horrible injury. I'm not a soccer fan really, but it's always bad to see an athlete be forced to retire due to an injury. Hope he's able to recover.
