I've been looking around a lot but am finding it hard to decipher which chemicals they protect against and if it will be effective against tear gas and pepper spray.

Thanks in advance.

The economic choice is to buy a standard gardening mask and fill it with vinegar soaked cotton wool.

I used this with goggles in Genoa 01 and it worked pretty well.

respirators no, mil surp gas mask with ballistic glass eye pieces to protect from rubber bullets. I hear israeli gas masks are the best. New production gas masks can be found pretty cheap online, check cheaper than dirt (http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/)or copes distr (http://www.copesdistributing.net/). check out this zine (http://zinelibrary.info/pepperspray-cs-other-less-lethal-weapons) about protecting yourself from "non lethal" weapons

In the trenches of WWI soldiers would often breath through urine soaked rags when they got gassed. I am not sure if that sort of thing appeals to you.

I think I found a decent half mask respirator and some anti-vented goggles I am going to wear.(No gas mask I'd like not to get arrested in the first hour) Also lemon juice soaked bandanna as a backup.

Its your mucus membranes. Besides you don't have to wear it until you are about to get gassed. I suppose that I, sadly don't have too much experience in such matters.

True enough. I just actually came across a Israeli M15 military gas mask on ebay for about 30$. Although I'm just worried the production date may be old even though it says new, but for that price I think it's worth the risk. Of course a new filter would be needed, but I think that this is a better option and price wise is about equivalent.
