Hi, I'm from Australia, I have been doing a homework assignment on the Communist Revolution in Russia, and it seemed every 'search term' lead me back to this site, it seemed interesting so I signed up to have a look around.

I guess I don't perscribe to any specific, leftist or rightist views, but if I had to place myself, I would probably be 'a little' left.

Besides that, I am an atheist, and I really like tattoos....that's about it.

Hello. Perhaps worth reading would be 'The Marxian Concept of Capital and the Soviet Experience' by Paresh Chattopadhyay, and I've heard 'Revolution in Retreat' is also quite good, though I have no idea about how good it is. Still, it sounds decent, at least. Of course, you'd probably have to buy the two (unless you have access to Questia or something of the sort), but you can pick up at least the first one at a pretty good price (inasmuch as prices can be good, of course) at a used book store or website or library, if you're lucky. You may also be interested in the SPGB, who have positions which I think are at least worth reading on the RR (they existed from before it, and took a view on it in 1918). That would be on this site (http://www.worldsocialism.org/index.php). For example, this (http://www.worldsocialism.org/articles/why_russia_was_not.php) document is a basic summary of their position. One could either look around the site, ask on their forums (or Yahoo group, rather. They generally seem willing to help) for some links to their stuff on it, or use the search engine and hope for the best. Other than that, there's also this (http://libcom.org/library/the-bolsheviks-and-workers-control-solidarity-group). Personally, the RR doesn't interest me a whole lot as a historical period, I find ancient history more interesting, as well as the lives of people who created new ideas, so figuring out what their ideas were (because they're almost always distorted), where they came from, etc, so I haven't really done enough research into the RR to conclude exactly what caused it to go as it did. Not that most people who comment on it do. My own study of it in History hardly helped (in fact, one could say we learnt far more mistruth than we did truth). So yeah, good luck.

Welcome to this site :)

What is the exact nature of your assignment? Perhaps we can help right now. Else you can always open a new thread in Learning.
