Shit, I`ve just recently started reading crime and punishment and am totaly blown away by the sheer psycological dept of the characters, their motivations and reactions. I`ve already bought two more titles lol... I probably shouldnt have because one of them cost be a dundle (the idiot) but hey I have a feeling its well spent.

I`m anxious to hear what other people think.

I think Doestoyevski is a brilliant writer with a great insight into the human condition, however, I find something missing, I cant respect his characters as people very often, and in life I come across some real shits with more soul.

i loved crime and punishment. i read it towards the end of my senior year of high school. if you notice too, he is writing very much from the anti-utilitarian point of view. if i remember right, he was once a part of that movement, was arrested, the gun pointed to his head for execution, and then they got the note to spare his life. then he was completely anti-utilitarian.
anyway, back to crime and punishment. that book almost brought me to tears on many occasions, and at others had me reading faster then i had ever read before so that i could see what happens next.
i would like to go onto The Brothers Karamazovs (thank you RH for the spell check) when i have some time, but thats another monster of a book, and i have to finish what i am reading right now before i get to that one.

Shit, that book was a mindfuck. His approach to psychological case studies was well ahead of his time, including most of what Freud came up with. Great stuff, but ultimately depressing.

Dostoyevsky is definitely one of the best russian writers of the second half of the 19th century. This man had a deep soul and this can be seen through his works.
I have read " Crime and punishment" and " The brothers Karamazovs" ( that's how it spelled) in original, as russian is my first language. My opinion is that "Crime and Punishment" is great, but "The brothers Karamazovs" is greater. So, my advise to you all is to read the latter.
