A large group of Utopian Socialists whose disconnect from reality prevents them from creating true change. They're beliefs are okay at times, stupid at other times. They are correct in believing that LSD and 'shrooms are okay for general consumption. Their use of certain eastern mystical practices has caused a large portion of American peti-bougeosie to practice yoga on dvds, follow a watered down version of meditation, talk about thought changing the world and believing that recycling and a hybrid car alone will save the environment.

However, I find that their drug policies and belief in "real" meditation to be a plus and that both would do society some good.

Furthermore, Jimi Hendrix.

But, I also blame their failure as being the cause of Postmodernism and it greatly upsets me.

Therefore, hippies are sometimes cool (Jimi Hendrix) and sometimes not.

My cousin is a neo-hippie of sorts. He's vegetarian, is a hardcore environmentalist, his dream car is a Prius, and he thinks Lenin's biggest failing was his willingness to use violence .

Oh yeah, he's also really into drugs like weed and mushroom, and music, such as Led Zeppelin, and yes, Jimi Hendrix.

Indirectly. I support the idea that after the failures of present, in despair, more nihlistic ideas came forth. Analysis with no alternative.

Also, Jimi Hendrix

During all the Woodstock 40th anniversary stuff in the US, I heard an anecdote on the radio about how Abbie Hoffman came on stage at one point (invited to speak I presume) and tried to talk about some political issue and he got chanted down by hippies yelling:
"You're Harshing our Mellow".

Hippies were not really political - they were probably more like lifestylists are today - they think they are political but it is all about dropping-out rather than challenging they system. So you could think in 1967-1972 that you could combine hippie lifestyle stuff with political things, but when the movements began to die, that myth evaporated and so hippies kind of when into dispair and turned more explicitly to new-age ideas or whatnot. The guy who wrote "Dig-it" for example (hilariously anachronistic book btw) went from Yippie to self-help guru in the 70s to investment banker in the 80s.

Will someone please make me a shirt that says "You're mellowing my harsh".

EDIT: Oops, the book "Dig-it" is actually the book "Do it!" by Jerry Rubin. Sorry for the mistake, I guess I did too much Acid when I was a punk-rock kid.

Its hard to think of anything more pathetic than one stupid subculture fighting another, except maybe picking one of the least threatening subcultures to fight.

 er...wanna get hitched?

Anyway, on the topic....
I think the left (though revleft more than real-life-left) has a tendency to take labels and make sweeping (over)generalizations about the nature of the people upon whom the label is imposed (or who willingly identify themselves with the label). "Hippie" is a loose concept. Of course, there is the stereotype that we're all familiar with; petit bourgeois teenagers who don't shower and get high all day and have no connection to the working class and are pacifists and subscribe to some silly new age religion and think the solution to the world's problems is to light candles and listen to music and quit buying from corporations and use organic toothpaste and hold hands and make out. And naturally, there are many hippies to whom this description applies to a tee. However, there are also many "hippies" whose political beliefs are completely separate from their "hippieness" - to whom "hippie" is merely a culture or a clothing style or a music preference instead of any sort of dogma or political ideology. Or, to the extent that it may be any of these things, it is only really in a superficial sense. So I don't really see how it is productive for the revolutionary left to dismiss entire segments of the youth population due to a loose label such as "hippie" or "punk" or "goth" or "hipster" or what have you.

On a more serious note, I like hippies well enough. They are nice people and far better than any conservatists. Sure they are not perfect communists, but then who is? From personal experience I can say that most of them are working class.

So, I figure I should actually give my opinion instead of just saying Jimi Hendrix. And we must remember that there were other cool hippies besides Jimi Hendrix, like Janis Joplin, the guys from Jefferson airplane, and any hippy that will give me free weed. They are either non politcial or just under the delusion that they can change the world through peaceful means alone. They aren't exactly reactionary, but they aren't revolutonary either.

Then your problem is not actually with hippies, but with dirty people. Even some primmies I know have more "clean" lifestyles than I do. Not to talk of the modern hippies.
