I see alot of threads on hip hop and various forms of rock in here but we need a good thread about the many types of electronic music. So what kind of stuff are you guys into?
I've been djing for a few years so i've a big interest in many areas of electronic music the main types being uplifting/progressive trance & soulful/deep house. Besides those I enjoy everything from drum & bass to uk hardcore to 2step garage.
a few videos to get the thread going:

Finally!
I'm a huge fan of trance. I used to listen to ASOT, but since it stopped working in Germany, I now mostly listen to Above & Beyond's podcast; http://www.trancearoundtheworld.com/tatw/280

I first heard electronic music back in the early 1970's. Kraftwerk, Tomita, Tangerine Dream, etc. Nowadays, with the exception of Tomita, it all sounds to me as stale as week-old bread.

Definately my favourite meta-genre of music. From Jean Michel Jarre's symphonic masterpieces Equinoxe and Oxygene through to oldschool minimalist classics all the way to the complex multilayered productions by contemporary Psytrance, Drum 'n' Bass and Hardcore artists and DJs, there's gold to be found all round if you know where to look.
Damn, this makes me wish I could listen to my enormous MP3 collection, but it's currently on a computer that's out of commission. :crying:

I like idm, breakcore, dubstep, chiptune, drum n bass and some other electronic music, i like lotsa ambient sorta stuff too wherever that fits into..
I also try to make it when I get the time (breakcore, chiptune and hip hop mostly), but that hasn't really been for a while after I started going to school again.

I feel like there is so much bad electronic music but my room mates have shown me some good stuff in the recent years. I got into GAS and then other things by that guy on the Kompact label. The field is ok as well. I don't know if stuff like Black Dice is included but if so, that is the height of electronic music.

Grouping everything from trance to garage under this strange title of 'electronic music' is ridiculous. Things like jungle or dubstep have more in common with reggae than house but because you throw a dj or fruity loops into the mix they are suddenly all the same genre.
Guitars can be electric, can we talk about Hendrix here as well then?

Fine, more specifically this thread is for EDM(Electronic Dance Music) genres. Jungle and dubstep fall under EDM so you'll have to get over that.
Take your talk of hendrix or whatever other rock groups to a different thread.

Fine but I still think it's silly, what does techno have in common with garage? Grouping all computer based music together just allows people to make the false distinction between it and music made by 'real instruments' then completely disregard the former for being somehow less worthwhile.
Take your talk of hendrix or whatever other rock groups to a different thread.
I have no intention of talking about them just illustrating how Hendrix is just as 'electric' as kraftwerk.

Yeah thats a good point but for the purpose of this thread its easiest just to refer to all the related genres as electronic or EDM. Much EDM incorporates 'real instruments' but I think thats a discussion for another day.

Electric =/= electronic.
Electronic music is music that employs electronic musical instruments and electronic music technology in its production. In general a distinction can be made between sound produced using electromechanical means and that produced using electronic technology. Examples of electromechanical sound producing devices include the telharmonium, Hammond organ, and the electric guitar.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_music

Electronic music is music that employs electronic musical instruments and electronic music technology in its production. Electronic music is supposed to be opening new horizons towards melodic and rhythmic structures that are not limited by physical properties of natural instruments and its musicians.

I like drum n bass and dubstep most of all electronic music styles. And, I know it is blasphemous, but the Canadian dubstep scene has the best tracks out there at the moment in my opinion. The stuff that has been coming out from Rottun Records is just insane.

Can anyone of you guys please help me?
I really really REALLY don't get this type of music.
I'm not saying it's bad in any way, I simply don't get it.
Maybe if somebody showed me the point?
Same things goes for classical music, I simply didn't get it, until someone explained to me what's good about it. Now I'm ok with it
Sooo..... for example, can I in any way enjoy "electronic" music and remain un-intoxicated? Sorry, don't want to generalize, but all of the people I ever knew that liked electronic stuff (dozens) were usually either high in very eager to get high
Pardon me, I'm just an exploited worker who can't really afford doing drugs. Paying the rent has became somewhat of a ***** too
Again, I emphasize - I do not mean to say anything bad about your preferences, I'm just really intrigued as to why you actually like it?
Is it possible to like electronic music exclusively? Meaning you listen just that? Like for example rockers who usually listen just to.. well, rock.
Hmm, is there time for more?
Why did it go underground after the 90's?
What makes a good producer/DJ and why exactly? How do you differentiate them actually?
Now on to why I and many of my school mates visited those clubs regularly (this was 10 years ago, so don't attack me for being sexist - I was):
women were so much "easier". Going to a rock bar usually ment have to "deal" with all kinds of philosophical talk and stuff we were not really into back then - we just wanted to get laid and fast.
Techno clubs were full of chicks on all kinds of drugs and were openly encouraging sexual intercourse, even some more extreme versions like sexual orgies etc.
Still I always noticed some random guys who "danced with themselves" with no actual interest in any women, just gazing at the celling, laser lights etc.
Yeah, I'm biased as it seems. But do look at me in a new mature way, please
I'm really interested in this stuff and never actually took the time to ask/learn.

The point of electronic dance music is repetition. You have 'micro' repetition (the regular beats, and for the most part short musical phrases) and 'macro' repetition (the mixing together my a DJ of tracks contiguous in mood, tempo, structure and whatever). Listening to it requires one of two things - an enormous bass bin, where the repetition gets into your body more than your ears; or paying attention to detail, registering smaller shifts over time.
Sooo..... for example, can I in any way enjoy "electronic" music and remain un-intoxicated? Sorry, don't want to generalize, but all of the people I ever knew that liked electronic stuff (dozens) were usually either high in very eager to get high
There's a large and flowering drug culture attached to dance music - substances of choice, as you probably know, are ecstasy/MDMA, speed, ketamine and cocaine. This is also true of most genres of music - think how much hip hop and metal just wouldn't exist without THC. It is also 'dance music' after all - it's supposed to be 'social' in its reception.
There is also the music itself, which you don't have to be high to like. When I first got into it, I was 9, and not doing any drugs; when I got back into it when I was 17, I was straight-edge. I've never taken anything stronger than a fag or a vodka red bull after going into a club, and I've had some good times. Some subgenres it is difficult to see existing without their drugs, though (eg, jump-up and speed, happy hardcore and E, etc).
Pardon me, I'm just an exploited worker who can't really afford doing drugs. Paying the rent has became somewhat of a ***** too
Tell me about it.
Again, I emphasize - I do not mean to say anything bad about your preferences, I'm just really intrigued as to why you actually like it?
Is it possible to like electronic music exclusively? Meaning you listen just that? Like for example rockers who usually listen just to.. well, rock.
That's not my style at all, so I can't really comment. Yes, dance music has as devoted a following as any other genre, and I'm sure many of the myopic types who can only listen to one thing. But are there really that many around?
Hmm, is there time for more?
Oh, why not?
Why did it go underground after the 90's?
Same reason capitalism's in such a shit state - sitting on top of a never defunct underground scene was a parasitic ziggurat of sugary euro-trance and mind-numbingly idiotic hard house (neither trance nor hard house are by any means 'all bad', though). All the fans of the latter effectively upped sticks for low-grade US r'n'b (associated drug culture: rohypnol) around 2001-2, which is also obviously a good bass-bin botherer of a genre. The crash was always overstated, and dance hits have bothered the charts for the intervening years - firstly the whole 'funky house' thing, and then the dirty/electro house explosion after that. Now's an interesting time, where you've got a lot of cross-pollination between scenes of very different origins.
What makes a good producer/DJ and why exactly? How do you differentiate them actually?
Producers:
-ATTENTION TO DETAIL. A producer has chosen to do a genre of music that can so easily be boring - they have to keep as much moving without sending the groove off kilter.
-Ability to remix. the remix should both slightly remind you of the original and break with it radically. It's a dialectical art, and it's key to being a good producer.
-Discipline. Everybody wants to make a massive piano riff to get everyone's hands in the air. A good minimal techno producer should be able to get that same reaction by screwing around with white noise - then the DJ can drop the piano track later on.
DJs:
-Encyclopaedic knowledge of music, inside and outside of their main genre.
-Good connections for promos etc.
-Crowd reading.
-DJs can get away with no skills at all, cf. Oakenfold - with a good DJ transitions between tracks are smoother, and the tracks change in mood as the night goes on. It's more of an art than a science.
There are so many producers working at any given time that only a few will be remembered at all; but there are always a clutch worth following, about which you think after five years of silence: "whatever happened to Decomposed Subsonic?"

I really really REALLY don't get this type of music.
I'm not saying it's bad in any way, I simply don't get it.
I was like you too before. I was like "Wtf who wants to listen to this shit? It's not even real instruments!" But then I realized that it's just a different type of music, with different types of instruments. I mean, what is a "real" instrument anyway?
Also, I tried my hand at making a "techno" song for a project in high school, but I found it much harder than I thought, and realized it took skill to make things sound even half decent.
Maybe if somebody showed me the point?
Same things goes for classical music, I simply didn't get it, until someone explained to me what's good about it. Now I'm ok with it
For me, it's all about the grooves and beats. All the drums and synths create layers of sound that have so many textures... it's very aurally pleasing. And the beats are just so groovy! Even if you don't like dancing, you can't help but go "hell yeah!" inside your head once the beat is dropped in a song.
Sooo..... for example, can I in any way enjoy "electronic" music and remain un-intoxicated? Sorry, don't want to generalize, but all of the people I ever knew that liked electronic stuff (dozens) were usually either high in very eager to get high
Pardon me, I'm just an exploited worker who can't really afford doing drugs. Paying the rent has became somewhat of a ***** too :laugh:I don't do any drugs (well, I "do" alcohol and caffeine if you want to be picky), and I enjoy electronic music (although I don't dance to it unless I've got at least a six-pack in me). Again, I think that electronic music is all about finding a groove/beat that you like, with a certain atmosphere created by the music to enjoy.
Again, I emphasize - I do not mean to say anything bad about your preferences, I'm just really intrigued as to why you actually like it?
Is it possible to like electronic music exclusively? Meaning you listen just that? Like for example rockers who usually listen just to.. well, rock.
.I can't listen to just one type of music. It's boring and all the artists will start to sound the same. I like electronic music, but I find it especially true of this genre.

How popular is happy hardcore in Sweden? Over here it seems to be a more northern thing.

Nobody listens to it anymore, beside nostalgics like me. :(

What about more avant-garde electronic music? People Like Edgar Varese, Terry Riley, Karlheinz Stockhausen, John Cage, Steve Reich. What about them?
