View Full Version : Who will have the worst season in football?

It's a question that's been on my mind since my "club" utterly collapsed in front of my eyes. Red Bull NY, the supposed soccer team of NYC and NJ, is now putting the final touches on what will probably be the worst season in MLS history. Out of 22 league matches played this season, RBNY has won twice and managed four ties, giving us a record of 2-16-4. Yes, that's 10 points out of 22 games. If you factor in non-league matches, it gets worse. Our goal differential stands at -23. We haven't won a league game on the road since the summer of 2008.
Oh, and our Managing Director and Sporting Director (the two most important members of the club aside from the head coach) just went on vacation, right after signing a defender who was never evaluated by the team.
So, as most of Europe heads into football season, does anyone here think this remarkable example in incompetence can be bested? Is any club in the world looking to have a more miserable season than the 2009 Red Bulls? I'm genuinely interested.

Apparently they had a striker called Mauro Shampoo who was also a hairdresser.
It gets funnier, he scored 1 goal in his entire career.
Theres even a film about him http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0930075/plotsummary

Carlisle United.
Sold our decent players, didn't buy any new ones. Manager is about to get the chop, and we don't have a goal scorer (literally our strikers admitted they are not goal scorers).
Also how about this fact:
Based on the stress ranking system, England’s Top 10 most stress-inducing clubs are:
1 Notts County
2 MK Dons
3 Carlisle United
4 Darlington
5 Swindon Town
6 Bury
7 Crewe Alexandra
8 Portsmouth
9 Stockport County
10 Grimsby Town

FC Groningen. They sold their top striker Marcus Berg to Hamburg, for €10M. However, they have to give a percentage of that money back to Berg's previous Swedish club, and the board is hesitant to spend the rest of the money right away, because the club is financially stable now (they were penniless just years ago).
Some fans are calling for the likes of Vennegoor (Celtic) or Koevermans (PSV), but this is utterly unrealistic, as buying either of these players would ruin their wage structure (a top player at Groningen earns €400K, but these 2 players earn €1.5M).
They haven't won a game so far, their goalscoring ability is gone, and their best midfielders are still struggling for any decent form. Unfortunately, it seems to me that they will be back to the mid-table, after competing for European football for a few years.

Aston Villa. Theyve lost their backbone (Laursen, Barry) and havnt replaced. Some of O'Neill's signings havnt been magnificent and he picks people out of position. I think theyll struggle to make top ten which when you consider they were challenging for Champions League 6 months ago is relatively worse than, say, Burnley getting relegated which everyone expects them to do anyway.

After today's loss to Hull, I feel that Bolton are really going to struggle this season :(
On the plus side, Utd almost certainly won't finish in the top two/three

It is amazing how quick people are to write off the champions of the three previous years after one defeat.

What's cemented my pre-season prediction (http://www.revleft.com/vb/showpost.php?p=1520721&postcount=8) of fourth is that the lack of quality up front has become glaringly obvious. There's simply not enough talent in this side to make up Ronaldo's 30+ goals per season

I don't know. I heard Barry Glendenning on Guardian football weekly talking about them not even making the top four. I don't think that they have that bad a team, and will either win it or come second. My prediction would be United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool. I think United still have a lot of quality and depth and people are writing them off very quickly.

What Utd have is Ferguson (I would not like to have been in that dressing room at half time yesterday!) and what we Irish often call the arrogance, in a positive way, and sheer mental strength that comes with constant success. Utd's history provides its own momentum and that means that you can never entirely write them off
But when you look at this Utd team with a sober eye there's really not much there. Look at the first team against Wigan - Nani, Fletcher, Neville, Evans (granted Rio was out), Evra... these are not the quality players of which title challenges are made. Scholes and Giggs can only feature intermittently this season and there's no obvious replacements on the bench. Meanwhile I've still to be convinced by the Rooney/Berbs partnership. In the past Ronaldo's scintillating form made up for any defects but does anyone really see this team surpassing last season's goal count?
Which is not to write Utd off entirely. Ferguson is a shrewd operator and how Utd cope will be an interesting subplot in what's shaping up to be a fantastic season. I just don't see them challenging, not with that team

I don't criticise teams like Hull or Middlesbrough, because they don't just park a bus in front of the goal and kick the opposition players as hard as they can.

I think Man United have descent replacements for Ronaldo, and especially Giggs. Valencia, Park, Obertan, Tosic, Nani... all capable of pulling off good games.
Don't underestimate Fergie.

Although I can't personally see Neville playing many games this year, I think that both he and Evra are top class full backs, who also add attacking options. Evans preformed well when called upon last year, as did Fletcher, who much to my surprise played some superb games. Ferguson talks about this being the year when Nani has to stand up to be counted. Maybe he is right. We will see.

I would also add Anderson, Wellbeck, and Macheda

I don't think we have really seen it yet. Maybe it will work. Maybe it won't. I think Rooney will have a superb season playing in the centre though, four goals in four games already.

Yes, I can. If they don't they certainly won't win it. last years championship was the one in which they scored the least number of goals, and in my opinion the least convincing.

Wellbeck and Macheda aren't wingers, and Anderson ain't either. However, good players.

I have seen Anderson played on the left wing, but more importantly Ronaldo was often used as a centre forward last season which is where Wellbeck and Macheda play.

Wellbeck and Macheda have to do a little more to prove they are Manchester United quality. Macheda did well in 2 games but it's pretty meaningless at the moment and Wellbeck needs to be played in position to see how good he actually is.

 False Stereotype my arse. Blackburn for example recently said they were going to (and i quote) "kick lumps out of manchester cities superstars".
