How would one go about making a sign HALF the size of this and what would be the most suitable way to erect it.

Mostly looking for an idea of measurements and list of materials required for its construction, erection in soil, and for sign-writing.

looks like just two sticks with planks running between them and some paint. The sign itself looks hand-painted.

All you need are two long sticks to use as posts, maybe cut the bottom ends at an angle to make the sign easier to pound into the ground. Cut a few planks the same length (as wide as you want the sign), and screw (best to use a power drill) or nail them into the posts in the shape of a sign. Then haul the sign out, find some soft ground, and pound it in. If you can get your hands on some plywood, that would make it even easier.

Perfect, I was thinking two stakes, plywood, and paint would be the easiest way to make it. It's going to become a useful message board on a main regional roadway. :D

If it's windy in the area and the sign isn't sticking up good, you might want to put some feet or something sticking out in front of or behind the sign too.

Not to sound like an arsehole but I think the most important issue is do you own the land you intend to erect it on and if not do you have the consent of the landowner?

Otherwise you'll probably find the sign taken down and it will be a massive waste of time.

Even a side of a popular motorway can be a remote place to take down a simple sign. I talk with personal experience. One just has to make sure it indeed IS a hard place to reach.

I was thinking of farmers and the like who often have lands near motorways who might object to having their animals disturbed. If the OP lives in Ireland then thats quite likely to be the case. Motorways are often dotted with speed cops so its not outside the realms of possibility that the pigs would give you a hard time.
