Yesterday I experienced psychological fear. It was a bit like watching "The Blair Witch Project". For several hours I was part of a human road block at the anti-BNP protest in Codnor and trapped between police lines. There was no clear view... of the situation ahead (blocked by police and their vehicles) or knowledge of what was going to happen to us. There was no escape route to our left or right either and my
imagination was running wild with thoughts of mass bloodshed. I had probably overdosed on caffeine to be honest, but it was a necessity after having very little sleep.

I kept telling myself the beating I was about to get was nothing compared to the suffering the Nazi BNP will unleash on society if they ever get to power. I was there to stop the fascists, and I had a duty to remain strong.

As much as I tried, however, I could not repress the vivid pictures in my mind. I imagined the riot police and the nazis getting ready to use extreme violence to crush us. I could not see what was going on (that's the Blair Witch connection) and that made it all the more terrifying.... Read more

As I linked arms with friends and strangers alike I clenched my body and waited for what I thought was the inevitable. But time after time the tension was relieved by the stewards and news of further negotiations.
This rollercoaster ride of fear and relief seemed to go on forever. Half of me wished it would hurry up and happen and the other half hoped for a peaceful outcome.

When the police read us the riot act I thought, shit, this is it! They told us there was three coppers for every one of us! And as I held on tightly to the people either side of me I wondered what it would be like having my bones broken by a gang of state thugs.

For a while I was part of a group which stood around hiding a comrade while he tried to cut a hole in the thick bushes to our left. It was an idiotic plan, but the situation was looking quite desperate. We needed an escape hatch, however small and ragged. But I really couldn't see us all queuing up calmly to squeeze through this tiny fucking hole while all hell was going on around us!

Thankfully, the pigs called our bluff. They decided not to smash our skulls in afterall. The fascists retreated and the police lines opened up.
From there we marched toward Codnor Market and along the way joined another large group of demonstrators. As we approached we chanted the news that we had achieved our aim.

NAZI SCUM DID NOT PASS!! NAZI SCUM DID NOT PASS!!

It was all worth it. Next time though, less fucking Red Bull.

when i was told about this i nearly cried with laughter. the author was in the same blockade as me, and I spent most of the time chatting with friends and generally enjoying the nice weather and company, it was probably one of the least scary demos i've been on (but also one of the most enjoyable), in short, this man is talking utter rubbish. there were children as young as 12 in the blockade he was in who were not worried at all, the prevailing atmosphere was one of enjoyment.

i suspect the author was disappointed at his lack of action and so felt a need to use fiction to substantiate his experience.

I probably would've felt the same way. I would have stood my ground like you did though. Unfortunately I've never had the joy of going to a protest. =[

I was there, and that account is massively exaggerated as barely anything happened in that barricade. You wouldn't feel anything like that guy did unless you were a loser to be honest.

Yeah, sounds like a load of attention-seeking bullshit, or a guy who likes to eat cyanescens before demonstrations. I'm guessing its the former.

Yeah, I think we should publicly slay an account made by a probably young and inexperienced comrade. Well done guys, well fucking done.

Yeah, I think we should publicly slay an account made by a probably young and experienced comrade. Well done guys, well fucking done.

If they're young and inexperienced, and already psyching themselves up about how it's going to be Genoa 2.0, and he "has to stay strong to stop the fascists", perhaps someone should, y'know, communicate with them and explain what's really going on? Especially when it's a group of people "hiding a comrade trying to trim through a shrub to get away"... :blushing:

Obviously everyone is going to have a different experience at protests like that, let's keep it at that...

Melbourne Lefty
21st August 2009, 06:26
right, because the BNP are dumb enough to attack protesters that outnumber them in front of police that hate them.

People need to wake up, the sort of attitudes here are completely missing the changed and very real threat of the BNP approaching the second decade of the 21st century.

The BNP is now working on another level, they dont exist at street level anymore. They should be considered to be [and combatted as] a political party with roots, however shallow, in their local communities.

Really? Are they of a particularly nervous disposition?

Not really. I don't have a clue how they perceived the protest like they did. Maybe the lack of sleep an red bull added to it, but I honestly didn't feel threatened in the slightest at the blockade, which Pogue has already confirmed with his own experience in the same blockade.

I get it that this person is a bit of a weirdo (and judging from the "battlezone" report, for good reason), but aren't the personal attacks just going a bit too far here? Despite all the shortcommings he might have, he's still a comrade.

Its not that the person is a bit of a weirdo, but they constantly attack people for any reason possible. You've not experienced the late night text messages, the facebook arguments, and the general idiotic behaviour. Don't get me wrong this person is dedicated, but sometimes they just make you want to submit all their details to redwatch

I don't consider him a comrade, or even a genuine leftist, i think he has a hobby of being the in SWP. Being in the SWP is his thing, he is totally blind in that he will support the SWP party line even if he doesn't understand it, he won't openly debate in a civilized manner and he is a tosser. He criticises anarchism and doesn't even know what it is. He once said to an comrade who he deemed anarcho "why are AK press selling this, if they are anarchists it should be free".

These aren't just attacks because we don't like the guy personally, even though I don't.
