D.C. should become a state.
I tried searching for a thread on it, but nothing came up. So let's discuss it.

Why on Earth do you think Washington D.C. should become a state?

"DC Statehood" is just another liberal ploy to distract from actual travesties (immense poverty, no universal healthcare, educational system in shambles, etc). It's just a big distraction.

Isn't it just for the US capital? What advantage would come out of making it a state, apart from ending Rhode Island's days as the smallest US state?

Well, one problem with having D.C. not a state is with no voting senators or representative, it's getting shafted. 55.6% of D.C is African-American. Their say in the debate is even less than everyone elses. I don't think it should be written off completely.

I didn't know that. Could they not be allowed to vote for the Maryladn senators/representatives?

Yeah I often loose sleep about the lack of representation the residents of Washington DC have in the Senate - the Senate being a real progressive body :/

Come on people, get serious.

This has to be a joke. I hope it is anyway.

Moved to chit-chat.

I love how most threads on Revleft degenerate into the game of who's the most radical revolutionary.

Come on, get serious. Voter disenfranchisement, not to mention of minorities, is something that should be fought against. Just like eliminating literacy tests, grandfather clauses, and poll taxes was.

*sigh*
I never claimed it was a very important issue, but still I was looking for opinions. You don't have to be so negative about it.

I have read that it actually is true. Really sad, but then, the US system of voting should be overhauled and thoroughly reformed even by bourgeois standards. The main reason for the lack of class-based politics in America is the territorialisation of the false dichotomy between countryside and urban centers.

Washington D.C unsurprisingly has large areas of poverty that span across most of the city - do you think it's all just pristine white buildings http://english.aljazeera.net/programmes/witness/2009/06/2009614131358580123.html.

It's also a conglomeration of multiple cities spanning along the east coast. What's the point of making it a state even if you could? If you're up in arms about voting rights for DC citizens or something, then that's apparently on the tables for being introduced anyways.
