I don't agree with much of Freud, because he didn't feel that abuse as a child (particularly sexual abuse) had anything to do with adult mental illness or depression. I do think his ideas on sexuality are quite brilliant, though--so before his time.

I personally am a) more of a humanist, and B) not attracted to my father. He definitely was a brilliant man. I disagree with a lot of what he had to say, but all in all he didn't do too bad for a cokehead.

Freud was a poineer in his field as with all poineers mistakes are inevitable and the benefit of hindsight has allowed us to ridicule many of Frueds ideas.
The basic id, ego, superego relationships are still useful categories of understanding.

i just read Freud: Vision in the midst of Darkness, by Louis Breger. real good book, totally impartial to Freud, cuts him to shit some times, i.e., presents him as an ideological mind warped, neapolean worshipping, has to have his view as the accepted one or get the fuck outta my face type deal, and other times when he made and totally re-shaped the ideas of psychology, i.e., discovering the psychoanalytic movement, although there remains a tad of sketchiness over who initially discovered this movement, actually more so the clinical practice, in fact the authour suggests that it was his friend Joseph Breur(sp.?) and his famous case of the Dorthy patient. Freud was an amazingly complicated, twisted, genius, who right or wrong felt he discovered the source of anguish thru his posited oedipus and freudian slip, et cetera.....good book, especially when you think about how much is views have influenced our own lives and shaped a worldview on matters of the unknown. and he did like to go ski a few bumps now and then....when there was enough snow.

I totally agree with the Victorian Freud. I've been ripped off.... completely castrated. My penis-envy makes me so green with rage, I can't contain it any longer! Why can't I piss while standing up? Why don't I have a loaded cock to wield around with me all day? Why can't I think with my dick? I've been ripped off dammit. Never Again!!!!!

Ppfffttttt!

Almost completely discredited now, and being that he got a lot of his ideas from Nietzsche, still came up with good theories, such as the "ego" in which you can mold your own theories and take what you want.

Freud is 100% right, we are all made by sex, sex makes us grow, and when we cant make sex we are finished, consciesnce is enemy of the inconscious, and the inconscious is your happiness, so all the consious is making is supriming your hapiness, sex is the most important thing in life, it creates life, it gives pleasure, it doesnt let you die, because your life goes on on your children. He understud that adn prove it. he was one of thr greatest genious in the world, like many others!
