Past tense? When do you mean?

Historically? Depends on where you're asking, i believe for example in Yugoslavia the state had a say in what you do, but in Cuba you're free to do whatever.
I don't think there are any serious leftists who actually support that proposition, though. The ultimate goal of socialism is freedom from the bourgeoisie who pre-determine what professions are available to you!

well okay like i said i am new and what i want to ultimately know is how much would the government step in the private lives of people in a ideal setup of communism?

Not very much. It wouldn't really be necessary or practical, because the government is the workers themselves.

We think of government as being magical men in the sky who control our daily lives by force and propoganda in various ways that we have very very insignificant degrees of control over. Communism has none of that. Communist government is the workers themselves making decisions in proportion to how much they are affected by them.
It's worth noting that this form of government has only been achieved a few times through history. (Spain during the civil war, the Paris Commune... there are other examples, but these are the ones we as Europeans and Americanadians, given the similarity of the society, tend to focus on) Otherwise, any Communist government, as in historical governments run by the Communist party, is hardly what most leftists strive for.
