A specific question..

Does silver also have anti-viral properties?
The church is spewing out crap that the pig flu cant spread through communion, because silver cups and stuff are used.

a quick google shows many sites denying any medical benefits to silver and that is when ingested and the other sites sell the stuff.
also i can not imagine how drinking something from a silver cup could actually do more then ingesting that stuff.

so i would say its total bullshit.

Back to the topic:

Churchgoers are not at risk of contracting swine flu if they attend Holy Communion, Thessaloniki’s Bishop Anthimos said yesterday. “According to a scientific theory any bacteria disappear on the silver,” Anthimos said, referring to the goblet from which worshippers drink wine. According to the bishop, cutting out church attendance out of fear of contracting the H1N1 virus would be akin to “not using spoons at home and in restaurants.”http://www.greekrealm.com/forum/greek-current-affairs/10598-church-goers-reassured-regarding-swine-flu.html

Thats all well and good( still bullshit) but H1N1 isn't a bacteria.

Also bacteria don't just "disappear".

Silver nitrate is used by physicians as an antiseptic. They often put it on the skin before they cut off a wart or something, or they may apply it to instruments to sterilize them instead of putting them into the autoclave. The Ag+ ion is considered the active ingredient.

Thats true. Also silver nitrate is applied to some bandages and plasters as both a means of jacking up the price and as an antiseptic. Though silver nitrate is not used in most Church challices and nor is silver anyway. They're mostly brass from what i've seen.

I'd think the alcohol in the wine would do more to kill viruses then any silver in the cup, i doubt it would have time to act though

Silver, in the basic elemental form, has been known for its antibacterial characteristics for many years. Hospitals actually used to use silver lined cups for their patients for this reason. Now, with the availability of better antibiotics, hospitals no longer utilize silver like they once did. Yet this guy really shot himself in the foot during this announcement; like mentioned earlier, swine flu is a virus, not a bacteria. I would be very embarrassed of that blunder if I was him.

ethanol can denature protiens necessary for many viruses to proliferate, most famously SARS, but I am unsure how effective it is against H1N1. This article seems to suggest that it is: srssaftey.com/upl/files/9254.pdf

My father was a doctor, and a gynaecologist, and he used to use silver nitrate to clean out 'womens' infections', if you see what I mean.

And it was completely effective.

ive heard that copper is good for arthritis, hence arthritis patients are given copper bracelets.

I suppose its conceivable silver could have similar traits.
