Some 40 prisoners have been taken to hospital following a riot and a fire at a jail in the US state of California, according to US media reports.
The violence reportedly broke out on Saturday at the California Institute for Men in the town of Chino, east of Los Angeles.
A prison spokesman told KTLA-TV that the situation had been brought under control on Sunday morning.
He said some of the prisoners' injuries were considered life-threatening.
No prison staff had been hurt, the spokesman said.
The Los Angeles Times newspaper reported that the riot had begun at about 2020 local time (0320 GMT) in one of the prison's seven housing units.
Firefighters attended the scene after at least one of the units caught fire.

some prisoners injuries are considered life threatening, but no staff injuries?

sounds more like a prison guard riot.

Another possibility is that the staff injuries simply weren't reported.

There's not alot of information in the article, but if no guards were hurt, it seems pretty likely that the riot was between groups of prisoners and not against the guards.

^ probbily this, although not so common in the US, its in south and midle america very common to use prison riots and uprisings as an pretext to setle debts and fight over power between competing prison gangs.

now just hope somebody took the effort of shanking some aryan brotherhood or nazi lowrider scum.

I had read from Associated Press that it was started by rival gangs. I wish it had more relevance to prison rights.

It's not really about prisoners struggling against guards then?

I guess I'll have to move it to another section.
