Protest the Coup d’état in Honduras
Tuesday – Aug. 11 4:30pm to 6pm
Outside the Federal Building @ 6th & Market
The Resistance Forces Against the Coup d’état in Honduras have placed an emergency call to the international community to hold any kind of action in solidarity with their struggle on Tuesday, August 11. That day tens of thousands of people who have been mobilizing from all parts of the country since August 5, will converge in Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula to demand that constitutionality be restored in their country.
On June 28, the legitimate President of Honduras, Manuel Zelaya, was forcibly taken from his house by the country’s military forces at gunpoint and taken outside the country. An illegitimate and criminal government was installed with Roberto Micheletti as its president.
Since then the coup d’état has ruled by extreme force and repression of the masses, constant curfews, mass detentions, assassinations and multiple acts of violence perpetrated by the police and the army. It has violated as well the freedom of _expression, closing radio and TV stations that were reporting what has been happening.
The international community, except Israel, has condemned the coup d’état. Most countries have recalled their ambassadors; however the US has refused to recall its ambassador or cut aid and other ties with the coup d’état. The US is Honduras’ major trading partner and has used that country as a military outpost against the Nicaraguan and Salvadorian revolutions in the 1980’s. Members of the Honduran military were trained at the infamous School of the Americas, and Honduras continues to receive US military support.
Tell the Obama Administration:
1. Recall the US ambassador to Honduras now!
2. Cut ALL TIES and AID to the current Honduran regime.
3. Sanctions against the Micheletti government as agreed upon by the OAS.
4. Expose the complicitous silence of the media in the US.
