I'm thinking of spending some time this year reading a little of G.A. Cohen, a major leftist philosopher who died a couple of days ago. Is anyone familiar with any of his work? I understand that his book 'Why Not Socialism?' isn't yet available, which is what I'm waiting for in particular.
If anyone doesn't know him here's his Wiki page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerald_Cohen

I don't think he's very popular here, so you probably won't get very good responses.

Not popular as in unknown or not popular as in his ideas aren't liked?

ppl don't like him. I've personally never read him but I know his book "If you're an Egalitarian, how come your so rich?" is fairly popular.

There's the beginnings of an interesting discussion on Cohen in the obituary thread in Philosophy, that you might want to check out.

Oswy, the only thing of his that is really worth reading is his monumental work: Karl Marx's Theory of History, A Defence.
However, ignore his technological determinism and his functionalism (indeed, skip that particular chapter!).
