My Opinion
I have 'Free Trade', 'Globilisation', and 'Climate Change'.
I have been a subscriber to the New Internationalist magazine for many years now, having complete faith in it for it's honest look at life in (and especially from the viewpoint of) the South / Third World / Developing World.
The magazine does not openly report itself as being anything in particular, politically, though I would label it as anti-Capitalist. It's very pro-Development, in a manner which is fair and highly optimistic and respectful towards the dignity, honour, and strengthening of the Third World nations, and their peoples.
These 'No Nonsense' Guides are excellent for people who don't think they can handle picking up some massive book on Development that is so difficult to read that they'd put it back down after the first page. Or in my own case, purchasing them is a good way to support the continuation of the magazine, which in turn supports Third World communities via encouraging much needed Development, and Fair Trade (as opposed to the WTO's oppressive "Free Trade" ) between the West and the South, as well as educating the West about the South beyond what our governments would like us to know.
HIGHLY recommended!

The Current Selection of Guides
With the brief description from the website:
[list]
[b]World History
"Most people know only bits and pieces of history without ever knowing how they fit together. This book fills in the hidden histories - the continents and communities left out of the textbooks - and integrates them with the conventional narrative of imperial dynasties and superpower battles. Here is the whole story in one slim volume PLUS some lessons to carry forward into the 21st century."
Sexual Diversity
"Why are some people gay, some straight - and many bisexual? Is there a gay gene? The world is changing for sexual minorities. In some countries battles for equality have brought non-discrimination legislation. In others, being gay incurs imprisonment - or the death penalty. This book demystifies sexual diversity and addresses the war against nonconformists being waged by fundamentalists of all denominations."
International Migration
"Millions of people emigrate each year in search of a better life. Are they coming to steal jobs or live off welfare? And what happens to the communities they leave behind? This book assembles the latest facts and figures, and distils down the economic and social evidence - revealing exactly why rich countries need more immigrants."
Climate Change
"Heatwaves, hurricanes, droughts, floods - recent years have seen an increase in record-breaking extremes of weather. This book sifts scientific theory from scientific fact and presents the impacts on health, farming and wildlife, along with potential solutions."
Fair Trade
"World Trade: once the preserve of big business, run by corporations more powerful than governments. Now the ‘free’ trade they favour is the focus of public concern everywhere. What’s the alternative? This book on FAIR TRADE gives you a good idea."
Globalisation
"Globalisation: what on earth does it mean? For some it’s the ticket to a democratic world of instant communications and global prosperity. For others it’s a money-mad juggernaut spinning out of control, threatening cultural and biological diversity. This book traces the journey towards a borderless world."[list]

A Couple Of General Reviews
Taken off the blurb of one of the books.
"For as long as I have been writing about North-South issues - and that's longer than I care to remember - the New Internationalist has been there with pungent, pithy, probing, political analysis. Now they've had a bright idea to encapsulate some of their accumulated wisdom in the No Nonsense Guides. You can't go wrong - I personally intend to order the whole series."
[b]- - Susan George
Associate Director of the Transnational Institute.
"The No-Nonsense Guides are the most accessible and enjoyable means for people with hurried lives to find out how the world really works."
[b]- - George Monbiot
Environmental campaigner.
