Have anybody here read " Fifth Column" by Ernest Hemingway?
Do you think that Hemingway was communist?

I promise I'll read it this weekend. I'm not a huge Hemmingway fan, I think he was somewhat the Geraldo Rivera of his day. Also Alcoholics Anonymous banned their members from reading his work because he glorifies the wonderful experience of chugging scotch. I have to agree every time I pick up Hemmingway I have a cocktail in my hand after 10 pages. (LOL!!)

I'll get back to you.....

His heroes always drink whiskey.
Read " Farewell to arms", main hero is a good picture of an alcoholic, without Hemingway's mentioning about it.

I belive that H has admired passion. And everything that can produce it. Communism was one of that things..he was in Spain during that war (u know), and it's very possible that he was impressed with all that enthusiasm carried by leftists-idealists, surrounding and permeating him.
but... he wasn't so impressed with nazi-enthusiasm during u-know-what, so...yes, suppose that ,apart of his hedonism, he was a communist in a way.

I loved the old man and the sea, the other books of his I've read weren't that great however.

Will read " The old man and the sea" soon. Hemmingway got the nobel prize for it, and I heard that this work of literature is the one of the greatest.

i can not stand Hemingway books, they get too boring for me. I forced myself to read Old Man and the Sea, couldn't because it was boring. so i read the Cliff Notes to it for school. Next time, try for SE Hinton or somebody good like Abbie Hoffman-its much better

Have read " The Old man and the SEA" already. This one is great, the best Hemmingway's novel ever.

Anarchovegan, do you read books only for enjoyment?
Don't you read them in order to think over them after reading??? If you don't, I advice you to try to do it.

The old man and the sea was a very good book, ive read it a couple times actually. Yes, it can get pretty boring i suppose, but its really amazing how he doesnt miss a single detail, you can see exactly wat he sees, its almost unreal. well, it is unreal, lol, but you know what i mean.

its a great book.. cliff notes are for wimps - read the book!!

Ugh. I hated the Old Man and the Sea. I'm sorry but I just couldn't find a point to that garbage. Just my opinion, though.
