For me, it's between GZA and Nas, with Nas just slightly ahead. That being said, every time I finally pick Nas I listen to some old Wu track or something where GZA absolutely kills it. Anyway I'm curious as to your opinions, although I don't know how many hip hop fans there are on these forums. Here are some vids for reference:

I really don't like IT. He's a conspiracy theorist with shitty lyrics, a boring flow and an annoying delivery. I listened to two tracks off of Revolutionary Vol. 2 and had to shut it off it was so bad. Needless to say it's no longer on my iPod.

Blackalicious is good shit.
Runners up:
Sage Francis would be a great rapper, but he has little crossover appeal (and intentionally so). Bun B gets props for smoothest flow. Vinnie Paz is pure wickedness, but he has one style of flow and it requires a bit of teeth-gritting to get through some of his violently homophobic lyrics.
On a side note, I used to be enthralled with Immortal Technique until he came to speak at my school and I realized he's a self-important braggadocio. His "deepest" lyrics are really just conspiracy theory, as one person put it, or a random list of facts well-known to most people on this board ("The US is imperialist? NO WAY!")

Sorry, I have to say the coup straight up sucks. Dead Prez delivery and beats turn me off. Not much of a fan East Coast rap; just sounds to flat for me. I listen to underground Southside rappers though none of them are revolutionary, some are progressive when rapping about poverty and the struggles of life. I was raised to listen to chopped and screwed a Texas specialty. Makes any song sound bad ass especially when your fucked up.:thumbup1:

Apparently, the CC says 'retard' is not to be used in such a way.
well "retard" (as a verb) is a totally legitimate word - it means to delay or obstruct the process of development. If someone is "retarded" or a "retard" then they are someone whose intellectual development has been obstructed in some way, resulting in their overwhelming stupidity.
so there's nothing really wrong with the word.

I'm falling up flights of stairs, scraping myself from the sidewalk, jumping from rivers to bridges, drowning in pure air. Hip Hop is lying on the side of the road, half dead to itself. Blood scrawled over its mangled flesh, like jazz, stuffed into an oversized record bag. Tuba lips swollen beyond recognition. Diamond studded teeth strewn like rice at karma's wedding. The ring bearer bore bad news. Minister of information wrote the wrong proclamation. Now everyone's singing the wrong song. Dissonant chords find necks like nooses. That nigga kicked the chair from under my feet. Harlem shaking from a rope, but still on beat. "Damn that loop is tight." Nigga, found a way to sample the way the truth the light. Can't wait to play myself at the party tonight. Niggas are gonna die. Cop car swerves to the side of the road. Hip Hop takes its last breath. The cop scrawls vernacular manslaughter onto a yellow pad, then balls the paper into his hand, deciding he'd rather free-style. "You have the right to remain silent." You have the right to remain silent. You have the right to remain silent. And maybe you should have before your bullshit manifested.
These thugs can't fuck with me, they're too thugged out. Niggas think I'm bugged out, 'cause I ain't Sean John or Lugged out. This ain't hip hop no more, son, it's bigger than that. This ain't ghetto no more, black, it's bigger than black. So where my aliens at? Girl, we're all illegal. This system ain't for us. It's for rich people. And you ain't rich, dawg, you just got money. But you can't buy shit to not get hungry.
Telegram to Hip Hop: Dear Hip Hop .(stop). This shit has gone too far. (stop). Please see that mixer and turntables are returned to Kool Herc. (stop). The ghettos are dancing off beat. (stop). The master of ceremonies have forgotten that they were once slaves and have neglected the occasion of this ceremony. (stop). Perhaps we should not have encouraged them to use cordless microphones, for they have walked too far from the source and are emitting a lesser frequency (stop). Please inform all interested parties that cash nor murder have been added to the list of elements. (stop). We are discontinuing our current line of braggadocio, in light of the current trend in "realness". (stop). As an alternative, we will be confiscating weed supplies and replacing them with magic mushrooms, in hopes of helping niggas see beyond their reality. (stop). Give my regards to Brooklyn.

no (but I am a huge fan of 90's new york hip-hop). being american, i just don't find the accent pleasing to listen to in the form of rapping. also, it seems that most british rappers i come across tend to be from the south (london), and southerners, particularly londoners usually have a much more pronounced and harsher accent from the point of view of an american. it's not like i think british people are inherently shitty at rapping (although I'm not impressed by what I've seen in this thread), I just don't find it pleasing to listen to.

Would I be being sacrilegious to say that I think Chuck D is extremely overrated? And that Rakim's lyricism is not overwhelming, either?
Guru, someone mentioned Guru above, is, on the other hand, very talented and a serious artist, in my opinion.
Did anyone on this thread--I haven't gone through the earlier posts in a month or so--talk about the Living Legends crew? I think Mystik Journeymen and the Grouch have produced some high quality material. Some of the others, like Eligh and Scarub, are kind of like some of the mainstream artists I like, e.g. Nas, Jay-Z, Jeru: they produce occassional pearls but are excessively inconsistent in their ability to continuing doing so.

The best one by quite a long way in my view is Saul Williams. It's really not even like he just edges out the competition slightly, he's completely on another insane level.
After that:
Gil Scott Heron - fucking quality obviously.
Scroobius Pip - Best UK, by a long shot.
The Streets - I agree with the dude who says he's got experience of getting plastered and going to clubs and can therefore relate. This music is relevant to some people's lives, certainly. He was definitely best on his first album though.
Riz MC - Sick. :) Might have actually flipped my opinion on Islam with one track.

Quasimoto (aka Madlib) - Low Class Conspiracy. This shit is ill. He's not the best rapper ever, but you have to appreciate the brilliance of these beats and lyrics.

Eminem..... you cant deny it, fucking amazing lyrics.
example:
"you couldn't make the fans throw up their hands if they swallowed their fingers"
"your ass forgot, so just in case you don't remember me I'll run your brain around the block to jog your fucking memory"
"One thought in my cerebral is deeper then a Jeep full of people"
he's also a great freestyle rapper
His early stuff was okay but he hasnt made a good album since the Marshall Matters LP.
I hate it when puts on a voice when he raps.
Its not a voice, people from metro Detroit talk like that sometimes. You should check out his newest album, Relapse; you'll feel dirty just listening to it.
Saul Williams is awesome. He found a box filled with poetry on the street, that's where Amethyst Rock comes from; he published all the poems in a book The Dead Emcee Scrolls.

So are Mos Def and Dead Prez.
I think Bugz from D12 (he was killed and Eminem replaced him) is an excellent rapper.

Maybe you should listen to the songs, instead of making generalisations about southern hip-hop, it aint where you from, it where you at.
Alot of southern hip-hop is very interesting and alot of it is exploring new things while "refined rapfans" listen to IT because he raps "razorsharp" (about conspiracy theories and homophobic jokes that is).
Whatever man, I thought hip-hop was about fun.
With east coast and the west coast having done their time in the spotlight, the rise of southern hip-hop isnt without it's pitfalls (nor was east and west) but in the end it's gonna bring it's own element to hip-hop.
I'd take Lil Wayne over IT anyday, because I think that Wayne is more true to what hip-hop means than IT.
Hip-hop is changing and "superduperunderground" rappers (not dissing the underground just those that act as if non-underground hip-hop has no virtue) like IT cant keep up, because they are boring.
I dont wanna listen to hip-hop to only go "wow, what a insane lyricist" even more than that I want to get pumped up, relaxed, something good to bop my head to.

Dont be so pedantic, your posting style is very consending.
Who is talking about MTV?, do they even air music anymore?, I'm talking about southern hip-hop.
Why do stress is that mainstream hip-hop is not bad per se.
The difference between Lil Wayne and IT is first of all that Weezy doesnt pretend to be a revolutionary socialist. IT talks about revolution on one track then talks about "*****es taking a dick" on another.
Lil Wayne is interesting for trying new things, he even had a rock album, IT has been the same style for 3 albums now.
Hip-hop is about fun and IT is not fun, it's not something to bounce to, chill out to, getting fired up to.
Same (non-)flow, same beats, every single song.
As for Lil Wayne, try his song Georgia Bush. Strongly political song about hurricane Katrina.

just on the subect of immortal technique and "corporate rap". music is apolitical unless the musician declares it to be a political statement, Lil' Wayne is clearly making apolitical music whereas Immortal Technique is attempting to combine politics with music which makes him more open to scrutiny for his use of homophobic slurs.
Basically if you prioritize political statements in music over the actual enjoyability of the music, you'll find yourself: 1) listening to garbage purely for the political message contained in it. 2) eventually not listening to said garbage because they made a song which was at odds with their supposed message or signed to a label which didnt present itself as political 3) not listening to music at all when you realise it's art/leisure and not a complete political tool.

Wrong. Everything is political, even if it is apolitical on the surface. "Apolitical" things or people actually reinforce the status quo - this is political.
