Real versus Nominal Value

I don't understand what "real" value and "nominal" value are and why they should be "versus" each other, so to speak. I know they're obviously to do with economics and I looked it up on Wikipedia, but it went straight over my head. is it even relevant to this forum?:confused:

I hope I'm not being stupid, can someone explain what they are/mean? Thanks for your help.
