I recently finished reading the book "The long struggle of Eritrea for independence and constructive peace" and it made me interested in the subject of Eritrea. For those who don't know much about Eritrea's national liberation struggle, they struggled heroically for independence from Ethiopia and they were, by most part, supported entirely by the progressive world. When the Derg in Ethiopia came to power, the Soviet Bloc abandoned all support for the Eritrean people, which should prove the opportunist and imperialist nature of them.

My question is basically, how is Eritrea today? There is barely any information about the country available on the internet from a socialist perspective, so if you have any links, post them! It would also be cool if we could get discussion's about the country in this thread.

Although the country obviously isn't socialist, my impression is that it's a fairly progressive one, although I might be mistaking. It's ruling party is, according to wikipedia, "the only legal political entity in Eritrea. It is nominally Marxist, but is often considered African socialist." Eritrea armed the popular and anti-imperialist Islamic Courts Union in Somalia, who brought stability to Somalia. Eritrea has a higher life expectancy, less infant mortality, higher literacy rate than all of its neighboring countries in the Horn of Africa. Eritrea has the second lowest death rate on mainland Africa, Libya being number one, which gives me the impression its a fairly stable country. Above it mentions how Eritrea's ruling party is African socialist, is the country anything like Kwane Nkrumah or Julius Nyerere had in mind?

I was also interested in subject. I know they had a hard time.
To really know how life is down there, I doubt internet will provide any real and factual resources.
So if you're in spare time, pack a communist manifesto and let's go down for a week.

Add spare money for that.
Unfortunately, the old saying time=money is true :(
Luckily, there is no need to travel first class

Only problem (expense) is getting to Africa, from there on one can find means of transporting himself around.
