Around 500 'illegal' immigrants had been occupying a large building in the centre of Brussels for several weeks. They demanded a permit to stay and work in Belgium.
The police had ordered them to leave the building, the majority of them left quietly (as they had done with several previous occupations), but a small group stayed to resist the eviction.
The police showed up with an imressing amount of force, watercanons and helicopters were used, in the end, 80 people were arrested and the building was trashed to make sure it wouldn't be squatted again.
