I'm really having trouble finding some literature to read.

I'm looking for something entertaining, that is not really political...and, thats hard to discribe...maybe something like the literature equivalent of a road movie.

I'm really tired of reading classic literature for school and I already read a lot of political stuff.

I heard "Blowjob" is a good read, but i can't seem to find it. Would be useful if it's on amazon (yes yes i know), because i got a gift certificate for christmas....

please heeelp me. ;)

Johan Padan and the Discovery of the Americas by Dario Fo is quick and it's a really fun monologue but it's still smart at the same time. It was written by a communist who had not been allowed to go into the United States a bunch of times during the Cold War, but I never really considered it a political book. Its goal is not to teach you anything about politics or convert you to some weird ideology, but it just assumes that whoever wants to read and enjoy it wouldn't mind a few funny insults aimed at Christopher Columbus, his men and the Inquisition. It's great. You can get it at amazon.com, I think.

PS - It also won the Nobel Prize in 1997.

for pure entertainment, my recommendation is "fear and loathing in las vegas." you can read it as a commentary on the cocaine era, but i'd say really it's just a helariously funny book - it's probably the funniest i've read - and it is very well written and at the same time easy to read. you can probably find it in any bookstore. it's great.

thanks both of you.

maybe i'll get that "johan padan..." one.

as for fear and loathing in las vegas, I'm sure it's great, but i don't think i'll read it right now because i've watched the movie about a bazillion times already. ;)
if you haven't check it out, really great acting and the story of course is great as well.

i have seen the movie and i did like it. the cool thing is that so much of the dialogue is *exactly* like the book. however, i think overall it works better as a book (i'm not one of those people who say books are always better than movies, but in this case i do think so)

If you liked "Fear and Loathing.." then, you might like"The Great White Shark Hunt"by Hunter S.Thompson.
Farenhiet 451 is good though.

I recommend anything by Albert Camus.

But since some brought up Fear and Loathing...

The Electric Cool Aid Acid Test by Tom Wolfe is AWESOME!

Gotta love those Merry Pranksters!

Try some of these,

The catcher in the rye, Great expectations, On the road, The old man and the sea, Junky, LOTR, Interview with a vampire, 1984, The day of the Triffids, Stranger in a strange land, Brave new world, Moby dick, Around the world in 80 days, The satanic verses.

Those ones are good.

If you're after a road movie type book go for, On the Road, Jack Kerouac.
Something out there Junky, W.S.Burroughs.

Did anyone else here catch the picture of Che in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas?

If you want a light read that was better than the movie, check out Winston Groom's Forrest Gump.

I'd recommend Choke by Chuck Palahniuk, any of the Hitchhiker's Guide books, or Cranked Up Really High: Punk Rock and Genre Theory by Stewart Home.

Just got a good book- could put it down as soon as i started reading it- "Long Walk to freedom" by Nelson Mandela. seems to give a great insight into his background, not to mention his own national identity

Rain of Gold by Victor Villasenor

In RAIN OF GOLD, Victor Villasenor weaves the parallel stories of two families and tow countries... bringing us the timeless romance between the volatile bootlegger who would become his father and the beautiful Lupe, his mother-men and women in whose lives the real and the fantastical exist side by side... and in whose hearts the spirit to survive is fueled by a family's unconditional love
