In addition to Masnifesto's recommendations, let me add Seize the Time: The Story of the Black Panther Party and Huey P. Newton by Bobby Seale. Seale was a co-founder of the BPP and one of the "Chicago 8."

I also recommend Seize the Time, it's a great 1st hand account of the early years of the panthers.

There's also a nice movie called Panther by Mario Van Peebles. It was on youtube the last time I checked. There is also a novel by the same name written by Van Peebles's father Melvin Van Peebles. Nice read.

I recently bought a book of selected extracts from the Black Panther Intercommunal News Service (which also contains some essays and a DVD on the BPP newspaper). It's fascinating not just for its historical interest but also the revolutionary theory and practice that it shows. Great art too.
The title is The Black Panther Intercommunal News Service 1967 - 1980.
