The Obama administration is giving up on its August deadline for Congress to pass health care reform legislation, according to press reports. But far worse is what the administration has given up in the substance of the proposals--caving to pressure from a health care industry determined to maintain its power and profits.
Dr. Quentin Young is a veteran of struggles for civil rights and social justice, and a leading member of Physicians for a National Health Program (PNHP). He talked to Elizabeth Schulte about why the proposals currently being discussed in Washington fall short of what's needed.

The Obama administration has been reduced to shuffling deck chairs on the Titanic and calling it 'reform'.

Yeah it's sad. But there is more to the story. There was a rally in Madison organized by a liberal group connected to the DNC that organized a rally for "healthcare reform". The message from the front of the rally was that the public option was a step in the right direction. Everyone there supported single payer but bought the logic that Obama has put out. It's too much too soon etc. When comrades where there to present a socialist critism of the public option and argue that social movements are what is needed for real healthcare reform people where very open to what we said. You can see the subjective role of organized socialists in play. This is happening everywhere and it is a sign of good things to come.
