He´s the chairman (and spiritual leader) of the Revolutionary Communist party in the USA. He´s a strange figure who has a cult- like following among the party cadré. He has written several books, none of which I am interested in ever reading. The sooner you forget you ever heard of him the better:cool:

To understand Bob Avakian is to understand yourself, the universe, and the eternal laws governing them. Bob Avakian is the answer to everything, and whether you know it or not, your soul is shaped like Bob Avakian's face.

jk. In fact yeah Avakian is the leader of RCP, has a stupid cult following, but is still worth reading some of his work (or listening to his talks) because he is somewhat cool

Avakian hasn't been seen publicly in the United States for over twenty years, but he was here at least for a short time to give a few speeches which the Revolutionary Communist Party sells DVDs of. The guy has written some pretty decent stuff, but his party's obsession with Mao Zedong clouds a lot of their judgment; seeing that Maoist China during his later years fell in support of American imperialism and also, Mao's failure to even acknowledge Deng Xiaoping's growing popularity; a speech he made at the United Nations proclaiming support for market methods going completely unopposed. All in all, Avakian and his party aren't terrible, but I'm quite confident that when he dies, the party will split into 2-3 sections all claiming to uphold the line of 'Bob Avakian Thought.'

He's not important.

To RCP members, he's the Messiah, but is rather secretive and reclusive and rarely ever shows himself in public.

It's what happens when you hold the idea of a great leader so high and think that a revolution happens because you promote that leader to godhood.

Yea, it has to do with a protest of a Deng trip to the White House during (I think) the 80s. RCP members tried to interfere somehow, and a bunch of them got arrested. To avoid being thrown in jail, Chairman Bob bounced to Europe. That's the story I've always heard, anyway.
