I want to go Nepal and teach and learn, problem is to get there I need around $600 for the plane ticket itself and then about twice that to get into the program itself, so I need ideas on how to get the money. I'm thinking along the lines of a bake sale or a bike ride or something.

Try the old sponsorship method. :)

How's that work?

How's that work?

You get someone you know to pay for it.

Oh.

I don't know anyone with that much money.

Then you find x amount of people to pay for that sum.

Go around Door to Door Asking people to sponsor you so you can go raise money for your cause. This is very common over here in Ireland. I usually hand out €5 to a cause I feel worthwhile (not religious ones). If you get 100 people to give you €5 then thats a lot of money which can be made up in a relatively short time. Go Around door to door for an hour a day and you'll be loaded.

Agreed Comrade, I am always willing to give €5 or €10 (when I have it) to a worthwhile cause. Currently I'm saving up for a trip to the Basque Country but hadn't thought of seeking sponsorship for the trip.

I live in a rural area, so I'm not actually near that many people. Definitely a good starting point though.

How about working for the money?

Working for it is always a possibility. Though the sponsorship thing could work, depending on where you live.

But how many people can get work in this bullshit capitalist climate? Obviously working and saving up for the funds is the most honest and secure method though. Id like to listen to the OP's take on that.

I'm a middle school dropout with no experience, and shitty job market anyway. There's also the problem of not really having reliable transport into town ten miles away.

Yeah, well, what are you doing during the day? Try doing odd jobs in your spare time, like setting up a relative's TV or something get a little here and there. Even if it's something tedious, like helping a cousin move or cleaning a mates' bathroom for 1/2 the price of them hiring a maid. Trust me I know it sucks having to get paid below market rate, but friends/family always have crap that needs to get done and if you offer them a decent discount they'll pay for it. I've been there, asking old friends or family for work, including menial crap like taking their stuff to the post office or filing their old photos, when I was a goofball. But hey, if you plan carefully and have no other expenses you can raise 600 pretty quickly. You could let them know you're trying to raise money for a good cause, and that you'll do their shit in exchange for a decent donation.

My family's far away enough that I'd need a fundraiser to get to them to begin with and we haven't spoken in nearly a decade. Not much in the way of friends either... I moved here in March (with a girlfriend and her family) and haven't had much opportunity to go into town and meet anyone, both because of lack of resources and because I'm a legbeard.

Well it's obviously not worth pursuing this but what about your girlfriend's family?
