View Full Version : "pick what what side you're on"
Earlier across three young folks while walking down the road.
The conversation was as follows:
I am half Arabic half Turkish, my mum is from Turkey my Dad is from Saudi Arabia
Yeah but what are you? You gotta be one or the other.
Why? I'm half half
Yeah but ultimately you are one or the other. Which one?
Then they disappeared into one of the many restaurants around the area.
There can be no doubt that allegiance to Turkish nationalism runs in a small but hardcore section around that area, you can hardly escape it sometimes with folks talking about 'fucking kurds' and the like, it has converted into pretty bad violence too. I can't be sure of course, but the tone of the conversation wasn't great..
What would you put forward as the best way to answer that and take the two kids beyond that concept of nationality? Many answers come to mind but it could prove interesting to find out what you think.

You could go into a long speech about how the workers of the world have no nation!

My mom is half Cuban and half white, and I don't know my real dad's race but I'm a lot darker than my mom so I call myself latino or "Other" when I fill in my FCATs.

Well thanks to Imperialism there are many "white" cubans. But I'm sure you mean native. I suggest everyone fill out "other" in tests and applications and the like. Race shouldn't matter in any of these scenarios we are all humans.

FCAT is the most useless test ever conceived.
And how to combat nationalism? Tell them how Nation states and the idea of nationalism it's is a social construct that has killed many millions of working people around the world for profit and pride. The truth is the best answer. ;)

I am theoretically a "pure" finn, yet still I deny even that nationality. I find it to be in bad taste to identify with any nationalist racist scum who care about that stuff even remotely. I am above all a citizen of the world.

My parents are `white´, but I don´t really apply to that label because I am a tad darker hair and have a bit of what we Brazilians call `crisp´ hair. Fuck what race I am, I´ll still bleed red when some fascist hits me with a rubber bullet.

Its long being a cultural aspect of life that deems you have to pick a side from fairly low key stuff that dosent matter such as the fact your deemed odd if you support two teams in the same sport who are likely to play against each other to the arguments between librels and conservatives over if someone can be British and Polish.
Note how those who are more competive in the group they support are less likely to belive you can have any ind of alligance or identify with another similar group (for instance a die hard member of west hams firm is much more likely to have no other football team then someone who turns up because he likes hanging out with his mates at the footy). So you have the ultra nationalistic fuckwits ranting how you cant be British and of another country (racist dick wrinkles believe skin colour is often a mark of identity to a country or group of country so thats the basis many of them argue "you cant be black and british").
So its not suprise in areas where theres high ethnic tensions between groups people identify with there group more and as a result this "them or us" mentality kicks in.
So now we have addressed this cause that it comes from identifying with colour , region or whatever we need to see how we can stop people from doing this. Lets have a look at some epic fails though history.
1. Joining a side and making it worse
2. Patronizing typical libreal shite
and now lets look at this example of epic wins
The postal strike in northen ireland that united both communities who had previously being for years at war with each other in there common intrest against the ruling class. So getting those kids into some kind of working class struggle and making it widespread is a good plan. However obviously some ****s will be left over and with many of them the only way a working class struggle will be able to prevent nationlism amongst them is by suspending them nine feet high with a rope round their necks.

There's a popular expression, "Labels are for soup cans, not for people."
