So I think everyone knows the rap group Public Enemy. I think they rock, but do they have a real reputation as revolutionaries? I like the black panther themes and awesome lyrics, but the tv show where flavor flave was searching a wife got me thinking that are these guys serious. What do you think and know about they're reputation?

They have questionable politics but who cares, their music is amazing.

Chuck D's one of my favorite rappers. No idea how serious they are, but I wouldn't use a tv show about a member of a now media-claimed "irrelevant" band to support my judgement.

And here I thought we were going to talk about the real public enemy: Capitalism.
Talk to me about how Public Enemy views that public enemy.

It's no secret that Flavour Flav is quite reactionary in a lot of his social attitudes. His role in PE was as a kind of joker - the "hype man". Chuck D is the political brains behind the group.

Here he is:

I'm not really familiar to this forum, but is every musical act judged by their political viewpoint? I just like how the music sounds.

Yeah, I knew Chuck was the brain and Flave is lame. Politically I mean.

Yes. Unless a band's début album is an artfully coded commentary on Marx and Engels' The German Ideology, they get short shrift from us.

That makes you a lickspittle of the international bourgeosie and a running dog of imperialism. You cad!

They were the best. Fear Of A Black Planet is probably my most favourite album of all time.

They were both making beats at a time when laws around sampling/copyright didn't really exist and the radical wings of the Black movement were closer and closer to Nation Of Islam.

Outside of the black nationalist political content of the totally interesting combination of Chuck D and Flava Flav, the combination of noisy strangeness and supreme funkiness of the instrumentals were amazing. I think they were the first popular group to sample themselves. Fucking amazing.

Well, not even RATM lives up to that.

Chuck D is aight. Like people have said, he has politics.

Flavor Flav... also to go with the dodgy TV show mentioned already, did he not have a clothing sponsorship too? maybe I'm wrong? I don't dig that guy.

PE were on point in their old stuff, but with Flavor Flav showing his true colours (with all the money and fame he now has), they just aren't the same anymore...

I love Public Enemy. "It Takes a Nation of Millions" and "Fear of a Black Planet" are always going to be my two favorite hip hop albums.
