Can anyone recommend a good opensource vector graphics editor?

I've found inkscape to be painfully slow, and openoffice drawing unusable on my computer. I'd prefer something idiot proof w/ a GUI/WYSWG type interface.

Thanks!!!

Have you found inkspace tolerable? On two linux platforms, one with a top of the line CPU, I found it basically useless.

May I ask what techniques / operations you're using, and what you're using it for? (Have you tried Xara?) You know you can always draw on paper (with a marker), scan it in, select portions of the scan, and turn them into vectors through GIMPshop....

Xara eh? Let me give that a shot.

The purpose is: I have graphs that come out of one program, and I need to brush them up. Basically make them look more professional looking than I can under bitmaps which make them look kinda sloppy. It's a pain to add things like axes and map keys in the original program, which is why I needed a vector graphics editor. But I'll look into GIMPshop as well, both of these sound promising.

Yeah, you could easily do graphs in Xara.... It's best to *start* in a vector-based application (for line-based work) so that you don't have to worry about pixel resolution and all that crap....

The secret technique, which I'm only sharing here 'cause y'all are comrades, is to *encompass* whatever it is you're working with with a *larger*, encompassing object, like a circle (or, in the 3-D realm, a sphere).

Center the larger object at the point of rotation that you want for your primary object(s), and *voila*, just rotate both your primary object(s) *and* the larger object *together* so that you get the results you want -- particularly useful for making the markings on a clock, the segments on a pie chart, etc. (For a pie chart you should just convert your respective percentages to degrees, for rotating. For perspective just make your pie chart first, then *skew* it, perhaps from both left and right edges together.)

Font choices are pretty limited on the Linux platform, but here's a good guide to the ones that can be added from the Synpatic package installer:

Hope this helps -- go knock 'em dead with your sales projections...!

Just came across something interesting here, courtesy of digg.com -- it's *not* free / open-source, but good to know nonetheless....
