Erm, what exactly does Oi sound like? Sorry for my ignorance. I listen to punk and hardcore (a bit) and stuff, I assume it's a bit like that.

Oi sounds like Op Polloi. That's the best description I got. Download some songs from the bands on the list, soon you'll be enlightened.

What is Oi!?

1. "Hey!" (from cockney slang, a shortening of the greek 'oi polloi' or
common people.)
2. Oi! is the label which Gary Bushell (a British journalist) gave to the
late seventies/early eighties streetpunk bands who refused to be a
part of the plastic punk (call it the ancestor of MTV punk) that was
big at the time. Nowadays Oi! is thought of as a melodic, old school
type of punk but it was originally more of a movement than a sound.

The grandfathers of Oi! are Sham 69. They were one of the first bands
to take punk to a level higher than just shock value. They used their
music as a working class protest.

The classic Oi! band is the Cockney Rejects (who were the first band
to use the chant oi! in their music). Their 'ruck n roll' attitude (we
ruck n you roll) pretty much sums up the oi! stance, non-political,
working class, proud music.

A lot of bigger punk bands were also originally identified with the
oi! movement (i.e. the Exploited who as 'skinhead herberts' are on Oi!
the Album).

Oi! is streetpunk, oi! is working class kids winning, oi! is punx and
skins together, oi! is oceans of beer and mountains of pride.....

Forgot Sham 69 and Klasse Kriminalle. Excellent bands.

Its a bit hard to descrbie as it has more to do with the image than the actual music (go with Urban Rubble's description of the image). As for the music, the Dropkick Murpy's are considered more modern oi! (as they are considered streetpunk), they tend to be more melodic (either with the vocals, the music or both) and have heavy edges. Basically, check out any of the mentioned bands, if you're into punk and HC, you should like it.

hey, now i know why that one punkrocker kid at my school is always wearing that shirt that says oi on it. Thanx :) This is the same kid who asked me if that "one guy" on my folder (Che) was an anti war leader guy in the 60's and 70's.

For great lefty/anti-fascist streetpunk and Oi, might I humbly suggest Insurgence Records...

http://www.insurgence.net

Home to older bands like the Angelic Upstarts and Klasse Kriminale and newer outfits like Baltimore, Maryland's Fighting Chance, Toronto, Canada's The Class Assassins, and Montreal, Canada's Fate2Hate

Cheers!

Peter and the Test Tube babies
The virus
The Casualties
Cockney rejects
A global threat
Agnostic front
The Disasters
The Vaurkers
Subhumans
Cheap sex
Defiance
Lower class brats

The Cockney rejects' "Oi! Oi! O!" will give you the best general impression of what Oi punk is.

Another HUGE punk band, that flirts with both the Oi sound and politics is "against me." Download "walking is still honest..." and tell me what you think.

I wouldn't call AF oi!. They are influenced by it but they are most-definitely a hardcore band. Id say the most similar-sounding band to AF that Ive heard in terms of streetpunk is Youth Defense League (YDL's lyrics repel me but that's another story).

The stuff AF's released since they've been reunited (ie Something's Gotta Give, Riot Riot Upstart, Dead Yuppies) definitely has more in common with Oi! than it does with AF's early stuff.

As far as more Oi! bands than have been listed here, I'd recommend Fighting Chance, Jeunesse Apatride, and Esclaves Salarie. They're all lefty bands. As far as non-political/non-ideological Oi! goes, I'd recommend Oxblood when Frank Bruno was still singing, The Templars, Tommy and the Terrors (they aren't strictly Oi!, but neither are a lot of the previously listed bands), Combat 84, The Bruisers, The Righteous, Camera Silens, and Urban Riot.

And I don't mean to be a dick, but Comando Suicida, Sledgehammer, and Ouka are definitely hard-line nationalists. I'm not saying that it's a reason not to listen to them, but Brujo, ya kinda contradicted yourself by listing them and then excluding any other far-right bands.

I know, but as long as they aren't all-out racists, I generally dont mind (plus "nationalism" is quite a loose term. It could mean national self-sufficiency/self-determination just like it could mean national chauvinism. I am a pan-latin nationalist). If the music is good, I don't mind if they are either, ie: Skrewdriver, Brutal Attack, Legion 88, but I would prefer it if they weren't.

btw, welcome back.
