View Full Version : What Job

Simple question: What job do you do/want to do?

Please don't post any personal details, and obviously don't post anything too specific or that could get you into trouble.

I ask because being 17 this is something I am obviously having to consider alot at the moment.

As sports is really a huge part of my life, i think to get something to do with sports, sports management, manager, trainer whatever seem to be the most likely jobs i would really be happy with. But i have another year to rethink about those and maybe two extra in military:rolleyes: so i m not and that in a hurry on what to do.

I deliver a the Tampa Tribune (local paper), Wall Street Journal, USA Today, USA Sports Weekly, Barron's, IBD (Investor's Business Daily), West Pasco Press (very local paper) and The London Daily Mail to Stores and Racks. Pay sucks, hours suck (2-6) and I generally don't like it.

I want to be a writer and just travel the world, living an exciting life and then writing down a slightly cooler version of what I just did. So yeah.

I used to deliver newspaper too, had the exact same working hours. The salary/hour was not bad compared to other jobs. I think it was 200 NKR, divided by 7 equals 28.57 US $. But as you say hours suck(ed).

Ah this is bad, I'm in my mid 20's and not only did this thread immediantly apply and appeal to me but I can tell you it get's no easier, I'm still ''really confused on where to go and what to do next''. The one advantage of growing up in the relatively 'advanced' nations of Europe or North America is that with the right work ethic you stand a better chance of getting your 'dream job' than the rest of the world does. Be prepared to work bloody hard though, you need alot of luck aswell (right place, right time and all that) and without a incredible amount of luck you stand a good chance of working yourself into the ground or insanity before you do 'make it'.

It maybe a cliche but most people who will be your boss will be offensive in every sense. Sadly that's how they got there, personally even if we do have to live under Capitalism I can never understand the need for management to run there companies on fear rather than something else. For me it crushes any enthusiasm or creativity among the workforce. What's most pathetic is alot of people you encounter even at superivisor level choose to try this method of fear rather than dialogue.

Anyway if you want to become a writer then there's no better education than joining the ranks of the workers for inspiration. My experience is Retail can be a killa physically, office work mudane and boring and the one time you are actually earning good money and get to where a nice suit and feel your 'career' is going places you will struggle to actually describe what your job is to your mates and be forced to work 16 hour days still without a clue as to what it is your actually doing.

Maybe that was just me though, right now I want to be a writer :thumbup1:

my advice is dont underestimate the benefits of not going to university.

In my naive pridefulness i took a uni course that i couldnt cope with both financially or academically forcing me to drop out- now i'm stuck in a minimum wage dead end job unlike my contemporaries who have a trade.

:(

Your school or college will tell you otherwise but most employers dont give a shit about qualifications; its all about experience, bullshitting, arselicking and having friends in the right places. I'm probably more qualified than half the management in my place.

Good stuff, you saved me from writing this almost word for word since that's more or less what I did and the way I feel now. I can be quite good at all that bullshitting and arselicking but it has to become a 24/7 thing if you want to get anywhere with it, in other words you've got to turn into a complete twat.

Cliche yes but it's more true than given credit for. It isn't all hell though, you can become good friends with the other peeps that work there, it can give you a shot of confidence and teach you new skills and create a good work ethic. That is before your new 'friends' leave or worse yet turn into idiots, before your new-found confidence is crushed by sudden lack of self-esteem, before you realise these new skills are in affect useless in every other aspect of your life and that it's great having a new found work-ethic but your to bloody tired to achieve anything worthwhile (that is non-job related) with it.

Still there's allways the pay-check :), that is until you realise most of that is gone on bills/rent:(. Ok there are some positives out there I'm sure.

Forget a trade and forget uni for now, save a little cash and fuck of to asia or south america or where ever takes your fancy. Take a year or so, no parents, school or jobs can teach you the lessons you will run into on the way. You will not come back the same person (if you come back at all) so no point settling into a career just yet ay?

I've finished 1st year(of 3yrs) now & haven't a fucking clue what i'll do when i'm finished. If college wasn't such a laugh i'd drop out and go for a plumbing apprenticeship.
