I´d have to say in no particular order:

Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds - The Beatles

Heroin - Velvet Underground

The Perfect Drug - NiN

Divine Moments of Truth - Sphongle

Waiting for the Man - Velvet Underground (or Lou Reed?)

...and many others I will mention during the course of this thread if it gets going ;)

Well, this was a kind of easy task....

Marilyn Manson - Dope Show & I don't like the drugs(but the drugs like me)

Mystic Roots - Sweet Simsemilla

NoFX - Drugs are good

and I think all trance music is drug related, but I don't know why:)........

Fuck Dhul...you nailed this one with the the two Velvet Underground tunes. I also enjoy Koka Kola by The Clash.

By the way 187, "Smoke Two Joints" is actually by the "the Toyes" however Sublime did indeed cover it quite well.

The Byrds - Eight Miles High
Bob Dylan - Rainy Day Women
Cypress Hill - I Love You Mary Jane
Rick James - Mary Jane
Cypress Hill - Yo Quiero Fumar
Pato Banton - Don't Sniff Coke
Linval Thompson - I Love Marijuana
Barrington Levy - Collie Weed
John Holt - Police in Helicopter
Bob Marley - Easy Skanking
Dr Hook - I Got Stoned And I Missed It
Pharcyde - Pack the Pipe
Bob Marley - Kaya
Brewer & Shipley - One Toke Over The Line

Now, all the non-marijuana drug songs...

Grateful Dead - Casey Jones
Andre Nickatina - Ayo For Yayo
Queens of the Stone Age - Feel Good Hit of the Summer
Neil Young - The Needle and the Damage Done
Hmmmm...

Okay, a couple notes. I wanted to include "Panama Red" but I wasn't 100% sure whether or not Grateful Dead did it. I wanted to include "The Day I Tried To Live" by Soundgarden, but I'm not 100% sure it's a drug song.

Umm, what else? Pretty much anything by Cypress Hill is about drugs. Oh yeah, there's a compilation series of reggae songs called "Big Blunts" - and Big Blunts 2 & 3, respectively - with nothing but great marijuana related reggae songs.

Excellent submissions so far folks!

I downloaded a few that I hadn't heard in a while and were mentioned, like "Sweet Leaf"! :)

Dyermaker: You put down John Holt for "Police in Helicopter", is that the real name of Eek-a-Mouse or did Eek just cover it later? I was so sure that was his song, one of my favorites actually!

Oh, and "Needle and the damage done" is FANTASTIC, and I don't even like Neil Young that much after he left Crosby, Stills and Nash.

Most of my favorite songs these days are depressing heroin type songs, Velvet Underground and Neil Young and etc. Probably because I can't get strong drugs and am having seeeerious cravings for them ;)

Oooooh, I'm waaaiting for the man!! Twenty six dollars, in my hand! Yes I'M WAITIN FOR THE MAN!

No other song has so truely captured the feeling of coming down on drugs while you stand around with every last penny you could scrape together for the next fix, waiting for "the man", a person who can save you from hell and send you to heaven for one more day...

Oh man, Lou Reed kicks so much ass, and there's even a special thread on him now in Music :)

Oooh, one more thing I must ask you Dyermaker, is Linval Thompson a Jamaican guy, and is his song "I love marijuana" the one that starts with:

"Na drink too much if can't take it, na drink too much if can't hold it!!" and then goes off into a fantastic screaming deep voiced vocal assault proclaiming how much he loves weed? Great song, but I never had the name of the guy who wrote it, got it from kazaa and I think it was labeled wrong.

SenoraChe: If you believe artists from the sixties, they never wrote a single song about drugs. Even the Beatles deny Lucy in the Sky is about LSD, etc.

I'm pretty sure it's not ALL about drugs, but the laughing and screaming and "EVERYBODY MUST GET STONED!!!" parts are clearly drug related... imho of course :)

Dhul, I just made a special trip out to my car for you to look at my CD's, and yes, Linval Thompson did sing I Love Marijuana.

12th June 2003, 02:12
John Holt sang "Police...", Eek probably did his DJ thing on top of the version.

Linval did sing that, but I don't recognise the intro you cited, Dhul. But the lyrics go;

"I love to smoke marijuana, it gives me a deep meditation. Maaaaaaarrrrrrriiiiiijjjjjuuuuuuaaaannnnna yeah!" and so forth. Well, the "deep meditation" bit should be the clincher.

[list]Free Up the Weed - Lee Perry
Bushweed Corntrash - Rick and Bunny - this is about when, in Jamaica, you leave your house for a few weeks and when you come back a cannabis plant has grown in your garden. The quality wouldn't be that great, because it hasn't recieved any love and affection, so you throw it onto the fire and just burn it in one vibration. Seen?
Herbsman Skanking - U Roy
Tired Fe a Lick Weed in a Bush - Jacob Miller
Take a Dip - Dillinger
Colombia Colly - Jah Lion[list]

Oh i know- i never believe when they say "Its not about drugs." We all know it is so they might as well come out and say it too. However, for the Dylan song i have also heard the alternative explanation: remember how Dylan got booed and lost a lot of fans for using an electric guitar? Well from what i heard that is what the song was talking about- the people reaction to it. I dunno- there is always too many explanations for everything.

That was written while on alot of heroin, but about walking on the bottom of the ocean...I think, it said something like that inside a cd cover.

Rainy Day women 12 &35 was not about getting hight! It was about being a branded a musical heretic for the type of music he played...

"Well they stone when you try to be so good,
they stone like they said they would,
and I would not feel so alone, EVERYBODY must get stoned"

I'ts about being hated for his music, the use of teh word stoned was put in on purpose to make the song a bit more interesting, and funny.

Drug-related or not, it's still fun to listen to while high

BTW, add "Purple Haze" to the list of "obviously-about-drugs-but-the-artist-denied-it" songs. Hendrix claimed he wrote it about a dream he had while sleeping. ;)

Well most of the LP "Dirt" by Alice in Chains isn't really about drugs but it is about Layne Staley's heroin addiction. Fucking awesome album, everyone should at least listen to it a few times.

BTW, are you sure "Smoke Rings" is about weed? I don't doubt that Django was a weed smoker, and it may have double meaning, but I guess I always assumed it was cigarette related.

Anyway, good list :)

Holy fucking shit, you KNOW him?!?! The man is my GOD, next to Aphex twin there is no music as insane as his!

I think it's the instruments that set him apart, it sounds like he plays a lot of them (or samples, I dunno) as opposed to synthing it all. Or maybe he just has the world's best Synth, I dunno, but it definitely has a personal touch to the sound that is almost unmatched (well, there is Richard D. James of course...)

He was sort of a cult hit among people taking psychedelics and stimulants back in Iceland, I only heard him being played at coke/acid parties and such strange venues :)

I remember riding around in my friend's car on acid and he put Budakan Mindphone on, I had never heard any of his stuff before but this guy's brother was a cokedealer/DJ and was always giving us these wicked mixtapes.

I spent like 45 minutes going: "HOLY SHIT, WHAT IS THAT?!?!" and he couldn't get me to calm down, haha. Good times :)

Music Is Rotted One Note is another favorite, it's a bit different but the instrumental sound on it is truly fantastic.

If you see him in the near future, tell him he changed a lot of lives of some very tripped out people with his tunes :)

Yeah man! in Iceland!

Doubt if I'll see him anytime soon but if I do.....

He plays bass, piano some drums and bugger's about with loads of other shit, have you seen him live? fucking fruitcake!

I met Tom a few years ago and then bumped into him a few times also Luke Vibert/Wagon Christ - James Lavelle, Mr Scruff, Patrick Forge, I dont know if your aware of them, never met Aphex though - I think he's a recluse - ark at me I sound like a big name dropper. I DJ a bit and write some stuff but I dont want to go into that....

I think Seasons In The Abyss by Slayer is about a drug... It has to be!

Here's the lyric:
Razors edge
Outlines the dead
Incisions in my head
Anticipation the stimulation
To kill the exhilaration

Close your eyes
Look deep in your soul
Step outside yourself
And let your mind go
Frozen eyes stare deep in your mind as you die

Close your eyes
And forget your name
Step outside yourself
And let your thoughts drain
As you go insane... you go insane

Inert flesh
A bloody tomb
A decorated splatter brightens the room
An execution a sadist ritual
Mad intervals of mind residuals

Close your eyes
Look deep in your soul
Step outside yourself
And let your mind go
Frozen eyes stare deep in your mind as you die

Close your eyes... and forget your name
Step outside yourself... and let your thoughts drain
As you go insane... you go insane

Innate seed
To watch you bleed
A demanding physical need
Desecrated, eviscerated
Times prostrated

Coil's third album 'Love's Secret Domain' is pretty much an all drugs album. (hence the LSD reference... although they were mostly on Ecstasy while doing the album)

Another one of theirs would be 'Time Machines' an album with four long droning tracks to sort of simulate and support drug experiences. The tracks don't have real names, either... They're called
7-Methoxy-ß-Carboline: (Telepathine)
2,5-Dimethoxy-4-Ethyl-Amphetamine: (DOET/Hecate)
5-Methoxy-N, N-Dimethyl: (5-Me0-DMT)
and
4-Indolol, 3-[2-(Dimethylamino)Ethyl]' Phosphate Ester: (psilocybin)

... I am not sure if Venetian Snares or Autechre do drug-related songs, but they are at least in a relatively similar genre as Richard D. James' and Squarepushers stuff...

And how come all other Velvet Underground's shit was mentioned, but not 'Heroin', or did I overlook that?

Number 1.), "Legalise It" was not a Lee Perry work, rather a Peter Tosh (and more of an advocacy song anyway, but its all good, Lefty)

2.) Strange Brew, by Cream, has nothing to do with drugs, as does none of the songs from "Disreali Gears," oddly enough, which is probably the best single album ever created :)
