i purchased an old fashioned soda in one of those vintage bottle of glass, and i have been wondering: why the hell did they switched to plastic in the 60s?

i mean, i can understand that plastic is useful for exemple to contain chemicals but i dont understand why this widepread use of plastic.

i mean, sure it must be cheaper to produce glass than plastic, it dosnt require petroleum to make glass, and its way more estetic.

My intuition said glass. According to some of the stuff I'm reading, that's not the case. Plastic is actually more ecological. Plastic does give off more chemicals. The harm of these isn't well calculated at the moment.

I suspect the reason we think plastic is the amount of criticism it gets from environmentalists. Environmentalists don't want us to switch to glass bottles. They'd probably prefer it. They really want us to carry around our own beverage containers. Water can be acquired in individual containers. Pop and other beverages used to be available in person containers. It is in the fast food industry, for instance.

I really don't think everyone carrying around their own cup is a solution to environmental problems. I'll give somebody who does a pat on the back. However, it's extremely convenient to do otherwise. On university campuses, carrying plastic containers is realistic because we have containers that already hold books. What's a cup going to hurt us? Most people don't walk around with something to contain things. They'd have to actually purchase backpacks or briefcases to hold a cup or carry a cup around all the time. Can you imagine everyone going around the city with a cup? Instead of shaking hands, you clang cups together?

Environmentalism can be pretty damn stupid sometimes. As much as I like it, I have to admit that.
