It's really much more simple: generally speaking, plant foods in Western countries cost 10 kJ energy value from fossil fuel (e.g. from fertilizers) to put 1 kJ plant in energy value on the shop shelves.

Does that seem sensible?
What do you think will happen with the other 9 kJ?
What do we know about exponential increment of energy usage from stored sources?

There are alternatives to use < 1 kJ from fossil fuel to make 1 kJ of plant: plants can use the sun as energy source. These methods produce as much tons of food per area as fertilized products, but require something called polyface farming and local distribution.
